Description

Tasting Notes and Serving Tips for Argiolas Turriga 2021

Tasting

Color

The wine displays a deep ruby-red hue with garnet highlights.

Nose

The nose reveals fine aromatic complexity with notes of bark and graphite, alongside blackcurrant and black cherries. Aromas of milk chocolate and dark chocolate mingle with touches of vanilla, pepper, and tobacco. With aeration, nuances of leather and roasted coffee complete this Mediterranean bouquet.

Palate

On the palate, this wine stands out for its generous structure and beautifully fine, velvety tannins. The attack is intense, followed by a caressing mid-palate with round, silky tannins. Flavors of dark fruit intertwine with notes of chocolate and spices, delivering a silky, enveloping texture. The long, refreshing finish lingers on aromas of orange and chocolate, carried by precise acidity and high-quality tannins.

Food and Wine Pairings

This wine pairs perfectly with feathered or furred game, notably a wild boar stew. It also elegantly accompanies grilled or braised red meats, spicy dishes, and roasted wild mushrooms. An aged pecorino is also an excellent match to enhance this Sardinian wine.

Serving and Cellaring

Decanting the Turriga 2021 before serving is recommended to allow its aromas to open up. This wine can be enjoyed now while also offering excellent aging potential thanks to its tannic structure and balance.

Other Characteristics

This structured red wine needs time in bottle to fully reveal its complexity and multiple aromatic layers.

A Great Italian Red Wine by Argiolas

The Estate

Founded in the early 20th century by Antonio Argiolas in Serdiana, near Cagliari in Sardinia, the estate now spans around 240 hectares of vineyards across several of the island’s most prestigious terroirs. Under the leadership of the third generation, notably Valentina Argiolas alongside her cousin Antonio and her sister Francesca, the estate has established itself as Sardinia’s benchmark producer. Argiolas stands out for its exclusive commitment to native Sardinian grape varieties—cannonau, carignano, bovale sardo, vermentino, nuragus—and for its Experimental Biodiversity Vineyard preserving eleven indigenous varieties. Named Estate of the Year 2024 by Vinitaly International, Argiolas produces internationally acclaimed wines, including Turriga, combining respect for Sardinian winemaking traditions with scientifically validated sustainable practices.

The Vineyard

Turriga 2021 is produced under the Isola dei Nuraghi appellation, from vineyards located in the Trexenta and Sulcis areas. These terroirs benefit from varied soils combining limestone and sand, offering ideal conditions for expressing native Sardinian grape varieties. The Mediterranean climate, characterized by abundant sunshine and cooling maritime influences, promotes optimal grape ripening while preserving aromatic freshness.

The Vintage

The year 2021 in Sardinia benefited from a spring marked by regular rainfall, enabling healthy vine growth and good replenishment of soil water reserves. This balanced growing cycle encouraged steady nutrient accumulation and an excellent balance in the grape’s components, notably the polyphenols and anthocyanins responsible for color. These conditions gave rise to a well-structured wine with great aging potential.

Winemaking and Aging

After careful vinification in temperature-controlled vats, Turriga 2021 is aged in French oak barrels for a period of 18 to 24 months. This barrel maturation allows the wine to develop aromatic complexity while refining its tannic structure. A further 12 to 14 months of bottle aging precedes release, ensuring perfect integration of all the wine’s components.

Grape Varieties

Cannonau (85%), Carignano (5%), Bovale Sardo (5%), Malvasia Nera (5%).
