The estate
The daughter of one of Burgundy’s greatest winegrowing families, Francine Picard took over in the late 1990s the estate historically run by her father. Domaine Au Pied du Mont Chauve spans the communes of Chassagne-Montrachet, Puligny-Montrachet, and Saint-Aubin, at the heart of some of the finest climats and terroirs of winegrowing Burgundy.
With a view to creating synergy between the land and the wines, Francine Picard farms her plots in accordance with biodynamic principles and works with passion and the utmost care to produce wines that reflect the identity of their terroir.
From a 110-hectare vineyard cultivated using “agro-ecology,” the chardonnay and pinot noir of Domaine Au Pied du Mont Chauve are recognized for their quality, precision, and elegance.
Since May 2019, Antoine Lepetit de la Bigne, a specialist in biodynamic viticulture, has joined the Domaine team as Technical Director.
The vineyard
The vines of this Burgundy wine are planted on the higher slopes of the Côte de Beaune, at elevations above those of the village appellations. These plots benefit from specific climatic conditions, with cooler temperatures and longer nights that promote the gradual ripening of pinot noir. The estate applies biodynamic principles across all its vineyards, prioritizing soil health and the natural balance of the winegrowing ecosystem.
The vintage
The 2021 vintage in Burgundy was marked by balanced conditions that allowed for harmonious ripening of the grapes. Pinot noir reached satisfactory physiological ripeness without excessive sugar accumulation, thereby preserving the aromatic freshness typical of the appellation’s expressions. Moderate temperatures encouraged the development of aromatic complexity while maintaining natural acidity, ensuring the wine’s balance.
Winemaking and aging
The vinification of this Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Beaune 2021 was carried out with care to preserve the expression of the fruit and the terroir. The wine benefited from aging in oak barrels, bringing woody notes that integrate harmoniously into the fruit-driven structure. This aging period allowed the wine to develop aromatic complexity while refining its texture.
