A Chassagne-Montrachet Premier Cru combining concentration and freshness

The estate

Daughter of one of Burgundy’s greatest winegrowing families, Francine Picard took over in the late 1990s the estate historically run by her father. The Domaine Au Pied du Mont Chauve spans the communes of Chassagne-Montrachet, Puligny-Montrachet and Saint-Aubin, at the heart of some of the finest climats and terroirs of Burgundy’s wine country.

With a desire to create synergy between the land and the wines, Francine Picard cultivates her parcels in accordance with biodynamic principles and applies herself with passion and extreme attention to producing wines that reflect the identity of their terroir. From a 110-hectare vineyard worked in “agro-ecology,” the chardonnay and pinot noir of Domaine Au Pied du Mont Chauve are recognized for their quality, precision and elegance. Since May 2019, Antoine Lepetit de la Bigne, a specialist in biodynamic viticulture, has joined the Domaine team as Technical Director.

The vineyard

The climat "Les Chaumées" is located mid-slope within the Chassagne-Montrachet appellation. The brown soil, exceptionally rich in limestone with outcrops of Ladoix limestone and Dijon Corton stones, is almost entirely devoid of topsoil. The vines, around 40 years old, are farmed biodynamically with treatments based on preparations 500 and 500P, copper, sulfur and plant decoctions. Single Guyot pruning and natural grass cover complete this terroir-respecting approach.

The vintage

The year 2022 was marked by late budbreak, which protected the vines from April frosts. The vintage experienced four heat waves and pronounced drought. These conditions gave rise to white wines that are round, supple and complex, with fine concentration and remarkable balance, offering fresh-fruit aromas and pleasant vibrancy.

Winemaking and aging

The grapes for the Chassagne-Montrachet Premier Cru "Les Chaumées" 2022 are hand-harvested into small crates and sorted on a table if necessary. Whole-cluster pneumatic pressing lasts 2 hours and 30 minutes. After overnight cold settling in a stainless-steel tank at 12°C, the must is transferred directly into barrels for alcoholic fermentation. Aging takes place over 18 months on fine lees, split evenly between 228-liter Burgundy pièces and 350-liter barrels of two wines or more, from Damy cooperage.

Grape variety

This Bourgogne wine is 100% chardonnay.
