The estate
The daughter of one of Burgundy’s greatest winegrowing families, Francine Picard took over in the late 1990s the estate historically run by her father. Domaine Au Pied du Mont Chauve stretches across the communes of Chassagne-Montrachet, Puligny-Montrachet and Saint-Aubin, at the heart of some of the finest climats and terroirs in Burgundy’s wine country.
With a desire to create synergy between the land and the wines, Francine Picard farms her parcels in keeping with biodynamic principles and applies, with passion and extreme attention, herself to producing wines that reflect the identity of their terroir.
From a 110-hectare vineyard worked in “agro-ecology”, the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir of Domaine Au Pied du Mont Chauve are recognized for their quality, precision and elegance.
Since May 2019, Antoine Lepetit de la Bigne, a specialist in biodynamic viticulture, has joined the Domaine team as Technical Director.
The vineyard
The Climat "Concis des Champs" lies in the band of village appellations at the beginning of the plain of Chassagne-Montrachet, on historic red-wine terroirs between the villages of Chassagne and Santenay. The soil is characterized by its brown, silty and clayey non-limestone nature, offering excellent water-retention capacity. This deep structure, rich in organic matter, ensures optimal balance for the vine. The east-southeast exposure promotes even ripening of the grapes.
The vintage
The year 2015 stands out as an exceptional vintage for Burgundy. After a mild winter, the vintage was marked by strong contrasts: an icy spring followed by a prolonged heatwave from mid-May to mid-August, with exceptional sunshine and periods of drought. The hot, dry conditions, particularly in August, concentrated the grape juice. Sporadic rainy spells followed by a welcome wind preserved the soundness of the grapes. The vintage stands out for near-perfect sugar-acid balances and remarkably pure fruit expression.
Vinification and aging
The grapes for the Chassagne-Montrachet Village "Concis des Champs" 2015 are hand-harvested and sorted on a sorting table. After 100% destemming, vinification takes place in temperature-controlled open vats in keeping with Burgundian tradition. Perfectly mastered aging reveals density with freshness and rare elegance, characteristic of the estate’s know-how.
