Description
Tasting characteristics and advice for the Saint-Romain Village 2020 from Bouchard Père & Fils
Tasting
Appearance
The wine displays a beautiful bright straw-gold hue, lifted by silvery highlights.
Nose
The nose opens with fresh aromas of citrus and white flowers, accompanied by mineral notes. With aeration, elegant toasted nuances emerge, bringing complexity and depth to the bouquet.
Palate
The attack is broad and generous. The palate reveals a fine mineral freshness paired with citrus flavors. The creamy texture and remarkable aromatic persistence round out the tasting experience in perfect harmony.
Food and wine pairings
This dry white wine pairs perfectly with seafood and shellfish, notably lobster, langoustines and oysters. It also goes very well with grilled white fish or fish in a light sauce, white meats and roast poultry. Bloomy-rind cheeses such as Camembert or Brie also make excellent pairings.
Serving and cellaring
It is recommended to serve the Saint-Romain Village 2020 between 10 and 12°C. Opening it around twenty minutes before serving allows the wine to reveal its full aromatic complexity. This wine can be cellared until around 2028.
A fresh, mineral white Burgundy wine by Bouchard Père & Fils
The estate
Founded in 1731 by Michel Bouchard, a textile merchant who became a wine merchant, Bouchard Père & Fils is one of Burgundy’s most historic houses. Today, the estate farms around 130 hectares spread over 450 parcels throughout the Côte d'Or, including 12 hectares of Grands Crus and 74 hectares of Premiers Crus. Since October 2022, the property has belonged to Artémis Domaines, the Pinault family’s investment vehicle. The entire vineyard obtained organic certification in 2025.
The vineyard
The Saint-Romain appellation is located in the Côte de Beaune, west of Meursault. The vines occupy steep slopes at an altitude ranging from 280 to 400 meters, benefiting from south and southeast exposures. The terroir is characterized by clay-limestone and marl soils, particularly well-suited to growing chardonnay. This high altitude naturally gives the wines their characteristic freshness and distinctive minerality.
The vintage
The 2020 vintage in Burgundy stood out for exceptional climatic conditions. After a mild winter without serious frosts, a sunny, dry spring encouraged early budbreak. Summer brought high temperatures and pronounced drought, putting the vines under water stress. Fortunately, the cool nights ahead of harvest helped preserve the grapes’ balance. For white wines, this vintage proved especially favorable, offering a fine acid-alcohol balance and intense notes of white fruits.
Winemaking and aging
The grapes for the Saint-Romain Village 2020 are hand-harvested and carefully sorted. After pneumatic pressing, the wine is aged for 12 to 14 months, around 20% in oak barrels with aging on fine lees and regular lees stirring, with the remainder in stainless-steel tanks. After blending, the wine rests for a further 2 to 3 months in tank before bottling, allowing harmonious integration of the different components.
Grape variety
100% chardonnay.
