An elegant, mineral Pernand-Vergelesses Premier Cru, the flagship wine of Domaine Chandon de Briailles
The estate
Founded in 1834, Domaine Chandon de Briailles is a family-owned Burgundy estate in Savigny-lès-Beaune, totaling 13.7 hectares across Savigny-lès-Beaune, Pernand-Vergelesses and Aloxe-Corton, with renowned terroirs including Corton. Since 2001, the estate has been owned by the Count and Countess Aymard-Claude de Nicolay and their children. A pioneer of biodynamics (conversion from 2005, Demeter 2011), it favors horse-drawn work, hand harvesting and natural vinifications, crafting 12 crus of precise expression.
The vineyard
The "Ile des Vergelesses" climat is the estate’s flagship and ranks among the most renowned terroirs of the Pernand-Vergelesses appellation, often compared to a Grand Cru. The vines grow on clay-limestone soils with an east-facing exposure, providing ideal conditions for slow, complete ripening of Pinot Noir.
The vintage
The 2021 vintage in Burgundy was marked by historic spring frosts that reduced yields. The cool, humid summer required constant vigilance, but allowed for slow ripening of the grapes. These conditions gave rise to wines characterized by their freshness and classic elegance.
Winemaking and aging
The vinification of the Pernand-Vergelesses 1er cru "Ile des Vergelesses" 2021 includes a significant proportion of whole clusters. The long aging takes place in oak barrels with little new oak, thus preserving the mineral expression and fruit purity characteristic of this exceptional terroir.
