The estate
Established in 1750 by Simon Verry, Chanson is among the oldest wine houses in Burgundy. Under the ownership of the Bollinger group since 1999 and the management of Vincent Avenel since 2017, the estate farms 88 hectares of vines between the Côte de Beaune (43 hectares certified organic since 2024) and the Côte Chalonnaise (45 hectares). Based in the Bastion, a 15th-century above-ground cellar in the heart of Beaune, Chanson Bourgogne holds the monopole of Clos des Fèves and boasts Great Place to Work certification, a first for a French wine estate.
The vineyard
Located at the top of the slope at the northern tip of the Beaune area, Clos des Marconnets stretches over clay-limestone soils, deeper at the bottom of the slope and resting on a limestone base at the top. Domaine Chanson owns around 4 hectares of this parcel, representing 40% of the climat. The pinot noir vines, from clonal selection, were planted in 1979, 1983, and 1988.
The vintage
Spring 2022 was mild with a rainfall deficit, followed by a hot summer marked by heat waves. Welcome storms in late August enabled the grapes to reach optimal ripeness. The harvest took place from August 30 to September 13. In Burgundy, this vintage is characterized by generous volumes, high quality, fine balance, and a pronounced fruity expression.
Vinification and aging
The vinification of Beaune 1er cru "Clos des Marconnets" Domaine 2022 is based on an infusion philosophy. The grapes are vinified 100% as whole clusters to extract a deeper color and enhance structure as well as aromatic complexity. Upon arrival, the grapes are immediately cooled via an estate-owned tunnel with no exposure to oxygen. Pressing is inspired by the Champagne method to obtain the purest juices. Aging takes place for 17 to 19 months in barrels, 30% of which are new oak.
Grape variety
Pinot noir.
