Decanter

An enjoyable wine from the Francois Mitjavile Roc de Cambes stable, made with grapes planted just outside of Bourg. Enjoyable, well balanced and cheerfully unfussy wine with a highly attractive smoky edge from carefully delivered oak. This is good stuff, and no need to wait.

80% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc. Cask sample. Ripe, rich and concentrated, the fruit on the edge of confit. Little evidence of the oak at present but a light, grainy, tannic frame. Voluptuous and gourmand as always. (JL)

A light touch of creamy espresso, cedar, tobacco leaf, spice, and earthy red fruits starts off the wine. On the medium-bodied palate, the wine is soft, open, and fresh, with spicy, earthy red fruits and herbs that carry through to the finish. 87-90 pts

Coming from the Côtes-de-Bourg appellation on the Right Bank and an estate owned by the Mitjavile family of Le Tertre-Rôteboeuf, the 2020 Domaine De Cambes is another beautiful wine from this team that has a singular style. Redcurrants, plums, mulled cherries, spicy oak, cigar, and chocolate notes define the bouquet, and it's medium to full-bodied, with supple, soft tannins and a great finish. It's a softer, more approachable wine compared to the more structured Roc de Cambes, although both are brilliant wines.

Description

The smoothness and fruity texture of a Bordeaux wine

The estate

Born from a dilemma and a loyalty to the land, Domaine de Cambes is François Mitjavile's most intimate Bordeaux venture. At the foot of the slopes of Roc de Cambes, between dikes and estuary, these marshlands that the Dutch protected in the 17th and 18th centuries have retained their misty breath and nourishing silt. Refusing to give up these vines that serve as his horizon, Mitjavile chose to craft a great Bordeaux here—simply Bordeaux, without the "Supérieur" designation—worked with the same meticulous care as at Tertre Roteboeuf and Roc de Cambes, fully aged in new barrels with exacting attention to every detail. The gamble, initially philosophical, has found its admirers.

The vineyard

Nestled at the foot of the slopes bordering the Gironde, the vineyard rests on clay-limestone soils and basic silts, with a long vegetative cycle. Here, the humidity tempered by the estuary softens the polyphenols, while freshness is maintained at the heart of the fruit. Predominantly Merlot (approximately 80%), complemented by Cabernet Franc (approximately 15%) and a touch of Malbec (approximately 5%), from old vines with shifting proportions, the blend delivers an age-worthy Bordeaux wine with caressing smoothness: tender, silky, dense without heaviness, with an impressionistic brilliance.

Winemaking and aging

Domaine de Cambes is worked exactly like Tertre Roteboeuf and Roc de Cambes, aged in 100% new barrels.

Grape varieties

Domaine de Cambes 2020 is a blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc.
