Description

Characteristics and tasting tips for the Echezeaux Grand Cru Domaine Gagey 2017 from Louis Jadot

Tasting

Appearance

The wine displays a moderately intense ruby hue, enhanced by garnet reflections that are beginning to develop, indicating the wine's evolution.

Nose

The aromatic bouquet reveals a lovely complexity with notes of smoky red fruits, particularly redcurrant, accompanied by spicy nuances and hints of charcuterie. Fresh cherry aromas mingle with scents of rose petals and rosehip, complemented by notes of fresh herbs and toasty oak.

Palate

The attack reveals a medium to full-bodied structure, with a supple and concentrated texture. Tart red fruits dominate the entry, supported by beautiful density. Nuances of orange peel and subtle tobacco enrich the palate. The tannins, firm yet refined, provide an elegant structure without heaviness. The lively, persistent acidity ensures a fine balance and promises interesting aging potential. The finish lingers with persistence.

Food and wine pairings

This grand cru pairs perfectly with roasted game preparations such as duck, goose or venison. It also elegantly accompanies aged beef, particularly when served with mushrooms or red wine reductions. Classic Burgundian dishes such as coq au vin or bœuf bourguignon make harmonious pairings. A selection of aged cheeses with savory, mineral characters ideally completes this tasting.

Serving and storage

The Echezeaux Grand Cru "Famille Gagey" 2017 can be enjoyed now and will continue to evolve favorably until around 2040. Decanting for one hour allows the wine to breathe and fully reveal its aromatic palette. Ideally serve at a temperature between 59 and 63°F.

An elegant and complex Burgundy Grand Cru from the Côte de Nuits

The estate

Founded in 1859 by Louis Henry Denis Jadot, Louis Jadot ranks among the most prestigious négociant houses in Burgundy. Based in Beaune, it currently controls approximately 220 to 270 hectares of vineyards spread across the Côte d'Or, Mâconnais and Beaujolais, including over 90 parcels classified as Premier Cru or Grand Cru. Since 1985, the estate has been owned by the Kopf family, owners of Kobrand Corporation. Thomas Seiter has served as president since 2022, while Thibault Gagey, representing the third generation of the Gagey family, holds the position of managing director. Frédéric Barnier has led the technical operations since 2012. The Maison distinguishes itself through its philosophy centered on the expression of terroirs and its commitment to organic certification of its estates, effective from the 2024 vintage.

The vineyard

The Echezeaux Grand Cru is located in the commune of Flagey-Echezeaux, in the heart of the Côte de Nuits, immediately south of the famous Clos de Vougeot. The vineyard benefits from an ideal south-east exposure that promotes optimal sunlight and excellent ripening conditions. The soils are primarily composed of clay-limestone with a significant presence of chalk and gravelly elements, creating a complex matrix that imparts distinctive mineral characteristics to the wines. The parcel controlled by Maison Louis Jadot through the Domaine Gagey represents approximately 0.87 acres of this prestigious terroir, acquired in 1995.

The vintage

The 2017 vintage benefited from favorable climatic conditions that allowed for balanced ripening of the grapes. The year was characterized by a regular growing cycle leading to a harvest under good conditions, producing wines with beautiful fruit concentration and a refined tannic structure, without excess alcohol.

Winemaking and aging

The Echezeaux Grand Cru "Famille Gagey" 2017 was vinified according to the traditional methods favored by the Maison, with measured extraction aimed at preserving the expression of the terroir. Aging took place over eighteen to twenty months in oak barrels, combining new and older barrels, allowing the wine to develop its complexity while respecting the finesse characteristic of the appellation.

Grape variety

100% Pinot Noir.
