A vibrant and generous red wine from Piedmont
The estate
Founded in 1978 by Luciano Sandrone who vinified his first vintage in the family garage, the Piedmontese estate quickly established itself as a Barolo reference after acquiring a parcel on the Cannubi hill in 1977. Since January 2023, Barbara and Luca Sandrone have perpetuated their father's legacy at the head of this family property. With an annual production limited to approximately 8,000 cases, the estate cultivates its vines according to uncertified organic principles and favors aging in 500-liter barrels. The wines elegantly combine Burgundian finesse and Piedmontese power.
The vineyard
This Barbera d'Alba comes from seven parcels located in the Piedmontese Langa. The grapes come from prestigious sites including Albarella in Barolo, Cascina Pe Mol in Monforte d'Alba, as well as Ravera and Rocche di San Nicola in Novello. Each parcel is vinified separately before final blending.
The vintage
The year 2022 is characterized in Piedmont by hot and dry conditions particularly favorable to barbera. The dry autumn precedes significant snowfall in early December. The winter is mild and dry with a brief cold period compared to the average of the last twenty years. Spring budbreak occurs according to a calendar similar to the 1980s. Early spring brings 70 to 80 millimeters of rain over a few days. A hot and dry period with cool nights accelerates the phenology. The small-sized berries present an excellent balance between fruit and acidity.
Vinification and aging
Manual harvesting of Barbera d'Alba 2022 is followed by parcel-by-parcel vinification. Spontaneous fermentation takes place with indigenous yeasts in open steel vats where maceration also occurs. Malolactic fermentation takes place in 500-liter French oak barrels. Aging continues for 15 months in mostly new 500-liter French oak barrels, then the wine benefits from 9 months of bottle aging before release.
Grape variety
100% barbera.
