Description

Characteristics and tasting notes of Angelo Gaja's "Rennina" 2018

Tasting

Colour
The colour reveals a delicate light ruby red, characteristic of its appellation.

Nose
The aromatic bouquet stands out for its beautiful Mediterranean complexity, exuding herbaceous scents of thyme, rosemary and tarragon, nuanced by balsamic touches. These blend with aromas of red fruits such as cherry and plum, accompanied by floral notes, a minerality reminiscent of crushed stone, as well as subtle touches of pine resin and vanilla pod.

Palate
The attack reveals an elegant and refined structure. The tannins, both complex, soft and enveloping, integrate perfectly without any aggressiveness. Beautiful acidity brings freshness and vibrancy, balancing the fruity profile. The finish, remarkably persistent, lingers on flavours of red plum, mocha and tobacco.

Food and wine pairing

This Italian red wine pairs wonderfully with rich and flavourful meats such as prime rib, roast lamb or game dishes in sauce (venison, wild boar, duck). It also enhances mushroom risottos or pastas (porcini, black truffle), as well as aged cheeses such as Parmesan or Pecorino.

Service and storage

With a dense structure and flavourful tannins, this 2018 vintage has significant aging potential, allowing it to evolve very favourably in the cellar for many years to come.

The freshness and aromatic complexity of a great Tuscan wine by Angelo Gaja

The estate

Founded in 1859 in Piedmont, the Gaja family estate has become a true global benchmark under the impetus of Angelo Gaja, a revolutionary figure in Italian winemaking. In 1994, the family expanded into Tuscany with the acquisition of Pieve Santa Restituta in Montalcino. This 27-hectare vineyard surrounds a historic fourth-century church. Today, Angelo Gaja still runs the estate, joined by his children Gaia, Rossana and Giovanni, who continue this pursuit of excellence and innovation while respecting the identity of each terroir.

The vineyard

Made under the Brunello di Montalcino appellation, this wine comes from the plots of the Rennina vineyard, spread around the estate's old church. Facing south-west, these vines, around 25 years old, grow on soils dating back to the Eocene. Unlike the region's classic clay-limestone terroirs, these plots stand out for their composition of sand, tuff and clay, enriched by the presence of galestro, a typical schistous rock. The estate practises demanding viticulture, including green harvesting and rigorous yield management.

The vintage

The year 2018 began with a rainy spring, followed by violent storms in July that saturated the berries with moisture. However, cooler weather conditions in September allowed the grapes to reach optimal ripeness, thus preserving excellent natural acidity.

Winemaking and aging

This cuvée is built on a rigorous selection of berries at harvest, allowing the full complexity of moderately ripened fruit to be extracted. The wine is then aged in wood, which subtly smooths the tannic structure while imparting delicate vanilla notes.
