Wine Spectator

Bruce Sanderson

A creamy style, boasting lemon curd, peach and pastry aromas and flavors. Builds to a crescendo midpalate before turning more focused on the lemon-, mineral- and spice-tinged finish. Multidimensional and long. Best from 2026 through 2035. 80 cases imported.

Decanter

The Bouchard Corton-Charlemagne reflects the vintage in an impressive way—it is a powerful wine, impressively substantial, long, and almost fat on the palate. Yet there is also an elegance and finesse to the wine that bring it into dynamic equilibrium, with aromas of ripe apple, apricot, and hazelnuts and accents of hawthorn and hay. The grapes come from the domaine's superb four-hectare holding at the top of the slope, where recent studies with Françoise Vannier confirm 50–60 cm of yellow marl and limestone pebbles above the bedrock, explaining the delightful fresh acidity even in a warm year, such as 2022.

The nose of this very beautiful Corton-Charlemagne transports me to an alpine meadow, when all the wildflowers are blossoming. I love the restrained, citrusy richness that is effortlessly interwoven with the stony minerality on the medium- to full-bodied palate of this graceful yet highly structured wine. Still quite tight at the very salty finish, but so much to give. From a 3.65-hectare plot at the very top of the hill of Corton, directly below the forest with a yellow-mark soil. From organically grown grapes. Drinkable now, but best from 2025.

The 2022 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru has a cohesive, slightly more malic nose, good tension and vivacity, and a fleeting touch of flintiness that frustratingly vanishes when I return after 10 minutes. The palate is taut and fresh with a caressing texture, but there is more grip, more phenolics in this Corton-Charlemagne as it segues into a judiciously spiced finish. Ginger and chai on the aftertaste, though it seems to caramelise with time in the glass and I am forced to reduce my score. Bottled under Diam 10. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.

Description

Characteristics and Tasting Notes for the Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru Domaine 2022 Bouchard Père & Fils

Tasting

Colour
The colour reveals a white hue.

Nose
Rich and remarkably complex, the aromatic bouquet expresses notes of white-fleshed fruit such as pear, apple and nectarine. The whole is delicately underscored by floral touches reminiscent of acacia, lily of the valley and elderflower.

Palate
Supported by vibrant acidity, the palate stands out for its freshness, finesse and a mineral salinity typical of its limestone terroir. The finish, wonderfully persistent, lingers on fruity and mineral flavours, enriched with subtle nuances of hazelnut and brioche.

Food and Wine Pairing

This great white wine is sublime with fish in sauce such as turbot with beurre blanc, shellfish like lobster or langoustines, as well as poultry in cream sauce. It also pairs harmoniously with delicate vegetables or matured cheeses.

The Elegance and Minerality of a Great White Burgundy

The Estate

The history of Bouchard Père & Fils began in 1751 under the initiative of Joseph Bouchard, although the winemaking estate was truly founded in 1775 with the acquisition of its first vineyards. Based at the Château de Beaune, this illustrious house from Burgundy now oversees nearly 100 hectares of vineyards in the Côte-d'Or. Since 2022, the estate has been part of the Artémis Domaines group, owned by the Pinault family, with Gilles de Larouzière Henriot serving as chairman of the supervisory board. The estate is distinguished by its environmental commitment and pursuit of excellence.

The Vineyard

Corton-Charlemagne comes from vines located in the Côte de Beaune, near the village of Aloxe-Corton. Set on slopes facing east to south-east, the terroir is characterised by oolitic limestone soils at the surface and calcareous marl beneath. The estate, certified for sustainable farming and transitioning to organic agriculture by 2025, places great importance on biodiversity and the preservation of its ecosystem, notably through the upkeep of its historic dry-stone walls.

The Vintage

The year 2022 stands among the region's finest climatic successes. Mild weather conditions allowed for a perfect balance to be reached at harvest, preserving the natural acidity of the grapes while achieving optimal ripeness, without excess sugar.

Winemaking and Aging

Made exclusively from grapes grown on the estate's own plots, the Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru Domaine 2022 undergoes a rigorous selection of bunches at harvest. The wine is then aged in barrels, lending it additional complexity.

Grape Variety

100% Chardonnay.
