A harmonious, fruit-forward Chianti Classico from Castello di Ama

The estate

Castello di Ama, founded in the 1970s by four Roman families in Gaiole in Chianti in Tuscany, spans 75 hectares of vineyards between 430 and 520 meters above sea level. Today it is led by Marco Pallanti, CEO and winemaker, alongside Lorenza Sebasti, managing director. A pioneer of the cru concept in Chianti Classico as early as the 1980s, Castello di Ama stands out for its limestone-clay soils that lend freshness and elegance to the wines, its commitment to contemporary art, and the creation of Apparita, an iconic merlot cuvée recognized worldwide.

The vineyard

The vines from which this Chianti Classico is produced are planted between 460 and 525 meters above sea level on clay-limestone soils. Averaging 10 to 12 years of age, they benefit from northwest and southeast exposures. Planting density reaches 5,200 vines per hectare, trained on vertical trellising with simple Guyot pruning. The harvest is carried out by hand to select the finest clusters.

The vintage

The 2023 vintage in Tuscany began with a balanced winter. Spring saw a drop in temperatures in April accompanied by rainfall, followed by frequent rains in May and June, requiring protection against fungal diseases. Summer proved sunny and warm in July and August, enabling optimal ripening of the grapes.

Winemaking and aging

Ama 2023 is vinified separately by grape variety in stainless-steel vats with indigenous yeasts at a controlled temperature of 28°C. Maceration lasts 23 days for sangiovese and 25 days for merlot. Malolactic fermentation is carried out in barrels. The wine is then aged for around 12 months in second-fill fine-grain oak barrels. Bottling is scheduled for spring 2025.
