The structure and richness of a Burgundy Grand Cru

The estate

Established in 1720 by Edme Champy, a Beaune cooper, Champy holds the title of the oldest Burgundy wine merchant house. Enriched by vineyard parcels acquired during the Revolutionary period, it evolved into a merchant-éleveur and today owns a 21-hectare estate spread across the Côte de Beaune, stretching from Volnay to Corton-Charlemagne. Led by the Meurgey family since 1990, with Pierre Meurgey at the helm, it is the last winemaking site still active in the historic center of Beaune. Its heritage is embodied in its 15th-century medieval cellars and its Eiffel-style winery. Its involvement in Louis Pasteur’s work on wine pasteurization is a defining element of its history.

The vineyard

Charmes-Chambertin flourishes in the commune of Gevrey-Chambertin, at the heart of the Côte de Nuits in Côte d'Or. This Grand Cru benefits from a limestone terroir enriched by a significant proportion of clayey marls. The vines are planted on east-facing slopes, at altitudes ranging from 240 to 280 meters. The Charmes-Chambertin appellation covers 29 hectares, within the total 85.5 hectares of Grands Crus in Gevrey-Chambertin. This exceptional terroir gives the wines an expression defined by power and roundness.
