Decanter

A wine of admirable density and weight, the 2023 Corton Bressandes from Chandon de Briailles boasts ripe mulberry fruit with a hint of black tea and minerals. The texture is dense and firm, and the fresh acidity, firm tannins, and abundant extract carry this to a lingering finish. The grapes come from 1.5ha split between Ladoix and Aloxe; the latter has more stony soil, while the former has more iron-rich clay. This should open in five to seven years and drink well for another 30.

Description

Tasting

Colour
The colour reveals an intense red hue with subtle purplish reflections, testifying to the youth of this wine from France.

Nose
The aromatic bouquet opens with vibrant notes of fresh red and black fruits, such as ripe cherry and plum. The whole is enhanced by delicate floral touches evoking violet and rose petal.

Palate
Combining power and elegance, the palate offers a beautiful density supported by remarkably fine tannins. It reveals a notable freshness and a harmonious structure, extending into a persistent and complex finish.

Food and Wine Pairing

This great red wine pairs wonderfully with roasted or grilled meats such as rib of beef, as well as traditional sauce-based dishes like beef bourguignon. It will also enhance game, sautéed wild mushrooms, or characterful cheeses such as an aged Comté or an Époisses.

Service and Storage

To reveal the full complexity of the Corton Grand Cru "Bressandes" 2023, it is recommended to serve it at a temperature between 16 and 18°C, taking care to decant it one to two hours before tasting. Built for long ageing, this wine can be enjoyed until around 2043.

The Elegance and Complexity of a Burgundy Grand Cru

The Estate

Founded in 1834 by Claude Guillemot, the Chandon de Briailles estate is an essential reference located in the northern part of the Côte de Beaune, in Burgundy. Spanning 13.7 hectares, this historic vineyard is now brilliantly run by Claude and François de Nicolay. A pioneer in environmental approaches, the estate stands out for its deep commitment to biodynamic viticulture, certified since 2011. Soil work, carried out largely with animal traction, illustrates the philosophy of this family estate: preserving the natural ecosystem to express the purest identity of its terroirs.

The Vineyard

The grapes come from the renowned climat of Bressandes, located mid-slope on the legendary hill of Corton. The estate carefully cultivates just over one hectare spread across four distinct plots. Facing south-east, these vines benefit from ideal morning sunlight. They thrive on clay-limestone soils rich in iron and dotted with small stones, providing perfect drainage and giving the wine its characteristic minerality and depth.

The Vintage

The year 2023 began under favourable spring conditions before giving way to a particularly hot summer. Sustained summer temperatures, notably during a scorching end of August, favoured excellent berry ripeness. To preserve the freshness and balance of the fruit in the face of this heat, morning harvests were carefully organised at the beginning of September.

Winemaking and Aging

Hand-harvested, the grapes undergo a rigorous sorting process. The winemaking of the Corton Grand Cru "Bressandes" 2023 favours the use of whole clusters at a rate of 80%, naturally fermented using indigenous yeasts in conical oak vats. Manual punching down and gravity-fed pumping over accompany this gentle vatting process. Ageing then takes place on fine lees, without racking, for 14 to 20 months in traditional Burgundian barrels, with a maximum of 15% new oak. This resting period takes place in the heart of the thirteenth-century historic cellars, ensuring optimal maturation conditions.

Grape Variety

100% Pinot Noir.
