Description
Tasting notes and serving suggestions for the Caisse Les Intemporels I 1982-1985-1986 from Château Angelus
Tasting
1982
An outstanding vintage, shaped by ideal weather from the start of the growing cycle through harvest: optimal flowering, a very hot summer, and rare yet decisive rainfall. The crop is remarkable, with rare phenolic and aromatic ripeness. The wine shows high aromatic intensity and a rich, harmonious structure, with moderate acidity that is well integrated and stable, while retaining freshness and indulgent appeal. Made from a blend of Merlot (60%) and Cabernet Franc (40%), this vintage is considered the first great vintage of comparable ripeness since 1955.
1985
The 1985 vintage, regarded as one of the great wines of the 1980s, stands out for its remarkable expression of Merlot (60%), revealed despite less sunshine than in 1982 thanks to an early, well-controlled harvest. Late summer (from September 20 onward) was more challenging, but it also highlighted high-quality Cabernet Franc (40%), bringing structure and aromatic complexity. This wine offers charm, roundness and a silky texture, for a generous and elegant tasting experience.
1986
A vintage of great elegance, shaped by a rather cool summer followed by a superb Indian summer that allowed optimal ripeness. Cabernet Franc expresses itself here with marked freshness and notable aromatic finesse. The wine, with its understated structure, offers tension and fine persistence, with spicy and menthol notes that underscore its complexity. The blend is evenly split between Cabernet Franc and Merlot.
Three great vintages from Château Angélus brought together in an exceptional box set
The estate
Founded in 1782, the Château Angélus is an iconic Bordeaux estate located in Saint-Émilion. Spanning 32 hectares, it has been run by the de Boüard family for 8 generations. The vineyard, planted mainly with Cabernet Franc and Merlot, benefits from a unique clay-limestone terroir on the southern slope of Saint-Émilion. The name “Angélus” comes from the bells of the neighboring churches, symbolizing the estate’s heritage and identity.
The vineyard
Located on the southern slope of Saint-Émilion, on the “pied de côte”, the Château Angélus vineyard thrives on a clay-limestone terroir that is particularly well suited to expressing Bordeaux grape varieties. The vines are 39 years old on average.
The box set
« Vintages follow one another, yet no two are alike. That is all the magic of a great terroir in constant motion, enhanced by capricious climatic conditions: each of these years writes the story of Angelus. »
True to this philosophy, the estate presents “Les Intemporels”, three box sets bringing together three extremely rare bottles, beautifully matured, bearing witness to historic vintages that trace the evolution of this essential Right Bank Bordeaux estate.
The first case, named « Les Intemporels I » highlights the 1982, 1985 and 1986 vintages. The 1980s were marked by a renaissance in winemaking at the estate, giving birth to vintages with rare aging potential.
