Decanter

Aromas of tobacco leaf, blueberry, and oak–derived spice presage a rather structured wine, with tannins reinforced by the lively acidity of the vintage: a firm, slightly angular profile at this stage, where the fruit feels somewhat restrained. Paradoxically, this same framework brings freshness that reveals palate depth. The finish carries a mineral, gently saline edge, suggesting versatility at the table. While it may currently lack enough expressive fruit, the balance of structure and freshness points to a wine that could integrate nicely with barrel ageing (20% new oak).

Hints of espresso, smoke, black currants, and flowers flow easily in the perfume. The medium-bodied palate is fresh, round, and fruity, with an espresso edge and a nice sensation of lift in the finish. The wine blends 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot. 14% ABV. Drink from 2028-2045. 91-93 Pts

Well structured, with a fairly tight fruit core: dark bilberries and slate, orange peel. One of the wines that needs time to unfurl and open up. The bright acidity is a little limiting and will soften further with ageing. Marc Perrin is now working with his father Eric and uncle Philibert. Yield 28 hl/ha, pH 3.63. Harvest September 4 to 24. 20% new oak.

Refreshing hints of red berries mingle with notes of licorice and a touch of cocoa beans. The velvety, slightly luscious attack heralds an elegant, harmonious wine. Its silky tannins are in tune with the acidic structure, and together these two elements provide a solid foundation. A savory, linear wine combining energy and precision, though it still needs time to open up and integrate the austere note on the finish. A fine success.

Deep red color with purple highlights. Intense, refined nose, fruity, pure and vanilla-scented. Precise on the attack, flavorful through the mid-palate and better knit than ever, the wine develops with juicy, even velvety texture, carried by well-coated tannins. Blend: 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot, 5% Cabernet Franc. Alcohol: 14°.

Vinum

The nose shows dark fruit, oak, vanilla, sweet liquorice and lactic notes; on the palate, delicate fruit with a pronounced tannic structure that provides support; good length, with a red-fruit finish.

Characteristics and tasting advice for Château Carbonnieux 2025

Tasting

Appearance
Deep, the ruby hue is enhanced by delicate violet reflections.

Nose
The aromatic bouquet opens with intense notes of black fruits, reminiscent of blackberry and blueberry. With aeration, subtle floral hints of rose and hyacinth emerge, harmoniously underscored by spicy nuances of licorice.

Palate
The attack is supple, giving way to ripe tannins that structure a round and perfectly balanced palate. The mid-palate, both textured and beautifully fresh, reveals indulgent aromas of red fruits and nutmeg, confirming the sunny, precise, and modern profile of this vintage.

Food and wine pairings

This red wine pairs wonderfully with game meats, such as roast venison accompanied by a fruit reduction or a cherry glaze. It will also enhance beef dishes in mushroom or herb sauces, as well as a selection of well-aged cheeses with pronounced character.

A great red wine from Pessac-Léognan with a sunny profile

The estate

Located in the heart of the Bordeaux region, Château Carbonnieux is a historic estate whose winemaking origins date back to 1234. This prestigious property, recognized as a Grand Cru Classé de Graves, extends over a vast vineyard of 100 hectares under production. Today, the estate is managed by Eric Perrin and Philibert Perrin, representing the fourth generation of the family at its helm. Combining centuries-old heritage with modern environmental practices, the estate stands out for its consistent excellence in both red and white wines.

The vineyard

The exceptional terroir of the Pessac-Léognan appellation is based on a complex geological mosaic. The 55 hectares dedicated to red grape varieties thrive on Garonne gravel rises, clay-limestone soils, and sandy plots. The vines, averaging 26 years of age, benefit from optimal natural drainage, promoting perfect berry ripening. The estate is certified Haute Valeur Environnementale (HVE level 3) and incorporates sustainable and organic farming practices, fostering local biodiversity and strengthening the plant’s natural defenses without the use of synthetic chemicals.

The vintage

The year 2025 was marked by an early and steady growing cycle. After budbreak at the end of March, the spring proved particularly dry. Flowering, though limited, occurred quickly and evenly in mid-May. Summer then brought very hot conditions with almost no rainfall. A few welcome rains in mid-July helped complete a rapid véraison. These climatic conditions resulted in a low grape load and accelerated ripening, requiring swift organization of the manual harvest between September 4 and 24.

Winemaking and aging

For Château Carbonnieux 2025, vinification begins with a 10-day fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, followed by a post-fermentation maceration of around fifteen days. The wine, divided into 25 distinct batches, was transferred to barrels between December 9 and 23, 2025. Aging then takes place over 14 months in 225-liter French oak barrels, with 20% new oak, preserving the mineral expression of the terroir while adding subtle complexity. Alcohol: 14% vol.

Grape varieties

45% merlot, 45% cabernet sauvignon, 5% cabernet franc, 5% petit verdot.
