Wine Spectator

James Molesworth

Features warm earth and roasted cedar notes that push a core of steeped plum and black currant fruit along, though there’s a distinct lack of energy in the wine. Ends with stolidity. Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Drink now through 2032. 4,000 cases made, 500 cases imported.

Decanter

High-toned cherry fruit on the nose, smells lively. Lovely purity on the palate and also some perfumed aspects which I really like. Nice solid core of flavour—elegant and refined. Textured almost like chewing grape skins, with dryness but also flavour at the same time. Good overall impression and one for earlier approachability.

Extremely aromatic with chalk and dried flowers, as well as blackberries and blueberries. It’s medium- to full-bodied with a steady layer of medium, round and chewy tannins and a long, spicy finish of white pepper and dark fruit. Try after 2026.

The 2019 Chauvin has a lovely bouquet of pretty brambly red fruit, rose petal and light sous-bois aromas, fragrant and floral. The palate is medium-bodied, crisp and taut, quite classic in style, with fine tannins and a structured, off-dry finish. Give this 3–5 years in bottle because there is a lot of substance here.

Flowers, cedar, smoke, licorice and red fruit aromas create the perfume. On the palate, the wine is soft, energetic and fresh, with a mid-palate and finish loaded with earthy, spicy, smoky plums and chocolate from start to finish. Drink from 2023-2035.

Falstaff

Falstaff

Dark ruby garnet with purple reflections and a lightly ochre rim. Ripe heart cherries on the nose with a touch of tobacco in the background. Fine nuances of blackberries, liquorice and some nougat also make for a multi-faceted bouquet. Juicy on the palate with a core of red cherries and a lively and fresh structure. Well-integrated tannins lead to a mineral-salty finish. This is already well-developed and gluggable, showing balance and length, but with further ageing potential.

Classic elegance with floral notes, wild berries, youthful and intense aromas, some oak and toast notes with crushed berries. Medium body with a fairly rounded texture, rather full palate with savoury red fruit flavours and good length.

Deep purple with a black core. Charming bouquet of dark cherries, chocolate pastilles and rosemary, with blackcurrant drops in the background. On the mid-palate, a silky texture and ripe extract, then the tannins tighten and wrap around the body. In the focused finish, macerated plum skin, sloe juice and tarragon. A clear step up compared to previous years!

Located on the Pomerol side of Saint-Émilion, with clay-dominant soils, this is well balanced, with rich seams of dark blackberry and bilberry fruit, lifted by fragrant notes of peony and smoked oak. Enjoyable, well controlled. Tasted twice. There is twice as much Cabernet Franc as usual in the blend for this vintage. 60% new oak. Harvest from September 26 to October 11.

Le Figaro Vin

A rather closed nose that gradually opens up to notes of bitter orange. On the palate, true opulence, red fruits, and a very interesting finish.

This wine already showed great promise during the En Primeur tastings, and it perfectly confirms what it hinted at. Fruity nuances have taken the lead, defining the aromatic profile. Perfectly balanced, the wine features velvety tannins that provide breadth. A fresh, fruit-driven finish.

The Wine Independent

Lisa Perrotti-Brown

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2019 Chauvin leaps with bright black raspberries, Morello cherries, and juicy blackberries notes plus hints of cinnamon stick and rose oil. Medium-bodied, refreshing, and elegant, the palate is packed with bright, crunchy fruit and a soft texture, finishing long and savory.

Vertdevin

The nose is elegant, delicate, and delivers power with subtlety, along with a lovely, very fine grain. It reveals notes of vibrant cassis, boysenberry, and a hint of crushed wild strawberry, joined by delicate touches of blue fruits, crushed (even slightly stewed) raspberry, as well as hints of Sichuan pepper, lily, nutmeg, and a discreet touch of fresh tobacco. The palate is fruity, balanced, and elegant, offering juiciness, lovely freshness (all in delicacy and subtlety), energy, finesse, a light tangy backbone, and a refined, elongated profile. On the palate, this wine shows pulpy/juicy blackberry, pulpy/juicy raspberry, and, more lightly, fresh redcurrant, with flashes of vibrant blue fruits, licorice, lily, toasted oak, cardamom, and delicate hints of caramelization and Bourbon vanilla. The tannins are precise, fine, and delicate. Good length. Lovely, sapid persistence. A beautiful square of fresh, fine, delicate velvet!

Jean-Marc Quarin

Jean-Marc Quarin

Deeply colored wine with a slightly discreet nose, fruity, with hints of truffle and wood. The palate is soft, fruity, and flavorful, a little reserved in its progression, but the tannins are fine.

91–93. Barrel Sample. A ripe, fruity and smoky wine, this is a solid example of this vintage. The black fruits are open and luscious, giving juicy berry flavors. The tannins lurk underneath where lies the power and aging potential. This Sylvie Cazes wine is all set for medium-term aging.

Description

The elegance and freshness of a complex and generous Saint-Émilion Grand Cru

The estate
It was in 2014 that Sylvie Cazes and her children acquired Château Chauvin. Continuing the work carried of the Ondet family, the Cazes family put all their energy and viticultural experience into this Saint-Emilion Grand Cru Classé. Since the 2014 vintage, the wines of Château Chavin have been graced with a new label, inspired by the one first published in 1929, the design of which charmed Sylvie Cazes. Cupid, the god of love, is thus pictured, along with the iconic lion of Saint-Emilion. This label pays homage to the symbolism of Château Chauvin, meaning "to be in love with one's land".

The vineyard
The Château Chauvin vineyard is located to the north-west of the town of Saint-Émilion. The property enjoys an exceptional location between Château Cheval Blanc and the Butte de Roi. The vineyard covers an area of 15 hectares of vines aged 30 years on average, planted in sandy clay soils with a significant proportion of iron ore on clay subsoils. The Château Chauvin vineyard has earned the HVE level 3 certification (High Environmental Value).

The vintage
A superb vintage for the property, 2019 at Château Chauvin perfectly exemplified the renaissance of the estate, while highlighting the unique character the its terroir. After a mild winter, the cool, damp spring led to a slowdown of the phenological cycle. It was at the end of June that summer finally arrived with high temperatures. Thanks to the clay soil of Château Chavin, the vines were not subjected to water stress. In September, thermal amplitudes between night and day allowed for perfect ripeness in the fruit, as well as beautiful sugar concentration, a great phenolic richness and good tannic potential.

The winemaking
Pre-fermentation cold maceration for 2 to 5 days at around 8 ° C. Alcoholic fermentation in thermoregulated stainless steel vats. Malolactic fermentation in barrels. Fermentation for 20 to 30 days. Soft and slow extraction.

The ageing
15 to 18 months in French oak barrels (60% new French oak).

The blend
Merlot (70%), cabernet franc (25%), cabernet sauvignon (5%).

The tasting
Tasted en primeur, the Château Chauvin 2019 charms with its fresh fruit and great elegance. The significant proportion of Cabernet Franc brings complexity to the blend. Merlot expresses itself through its generosity. Combining finesse, richness and remarkable balance, this beautiful 2019 vintage is guaranteed to seduce lovers of great Saint-Emilion red wines.
