You can sense this is a cooler vintage immediately on the nose — there’s more spice, more detail and precision. A little liquorice, leather and violets. Medium-bodied, not as dense as more recent vintages but very well balanced. Great precision, very upright and alert. It might not shut down like the 2015 — you could drink this already. It doesn’t have the weight and grandeur of some warmer vintages, but this is an excellent wine. It won’t last as long as some more concentrated vintages, but that’s not a quality issue per se. Very strong showing for a 2014 Châteauneuf.

With a nose of truffle, blueberry, charcoal, smoke, and spicy black plums, the wine is powerful, lush, silky, and concentrated. The crushed rock and stone character really comes through. There is good freshness, purity of fruit, and length on the finish. This is a definite contender for wine of the vintage. The wine was made from a blend of 70% Mourvedre, 10% Syrah, 10% Grenache, and 10% Counoise.

More forward and approachable than the 2013, the 2014 Châteauneuf du Pape Hommage A Jacques Perrin is nevertheless a massive wine that has more depth and concentration than just about every other wine in the vintage. A classic blend of 60% Mourvèdre, 20% Grenache, and the rest Counoise and Syrah that was brought up in foudre, this full-bodied, forward, sexy effort has thrilling notes of black and blue fruits, beef blood, licorice, ground pepper, and bouquet garni. While a relatively accessible, charming vintage (by this cuvée’s standards anyway), it still needs 4-5 years of bottle age and is going to evolve beautifully on its balance, complexity, and length. It’s an awesome 2014.

Description

The perfect balance of a legendary Châteauneuf-Du-Pape

The Châteauneuf-du-Pape Hommage Jacques Perrin 2014 is an exceptional cuvée from Château de Beaucastel and is one of those vintages that will last for decades to come.

Château de Beaucastel’s first vintage was in 1989. Since then, this Châteauneuf-du-Pape has become a mythical wine with exceptional character and uncompromising.

The estate is located on the northern limit of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation. It has an exceptional terroir consisting of rolled pebbles with a clay-sand soil on top of limestone. The Hommage Jacques Perrin 2014 reveals all the character of the vines, the old vineyards, soil and climate of this sub-region the Rhône Valley.

Mourvèdre is the signature grape variety in the exceptional Châteauneuf-Du-Pape "Hommage Jacques Perrin". Jacques Perrin had worked with a passion to promote this forgotten variety of the Rhône Valley because it is so difficult to grow.

The 2014 vintage was a year noted for its strong climatic contrasts, but it was a balanced vintage for Château de Beaucastel. The grapes were at their perfect ripeness at the end of a late growing season. When they were harvested in October, they were full of pigments and good aromatic potential.

The Châteauneuf-du-Pape Hommage Jacques Perrin 2014 is brilliant and expressive. Its aromatic bouquet offers pure fruit with concentrated black fruit notes that then evolve into truffle and spicy scents. In perfect harmony, the wine unfolds on the palate to offer a full body that emphasises the smooth, elegant tannins. The acidity balances beautifully with the creamy mouthfeel. The Châteauneuf-du-Pape Hommage Jacques Perrin 2014 is a truly successful vintage that is one of the classics that contribute to the legend of Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
