Characteristics and tasting tips for Château Fombrauge 1999
Tasting
Colour
This wine displays a red colour.
Nose
The bouquet reveals a beautifully evolved aromatic palette, characteristic of a wine that has reached full maturity.
Palate
The palate offers a mature, harmonious profile. The structure, still very much present, is perfectly balanced by softened tannins, a testament to its graceful evolution over the years.
Food and wine pairing
At this stage of maturity, this wine pairs wonderfully with roast or grilled red meats, as well as game dishes. It will elevate a duck confit, a roast veal with mushrooms or a rich civet stew. Dishes in red wine sauce and aged hard cheeses are also excellent choices to complement its complexity.
The mature elegance of a historic Saint-Émilion vintage
The estate
Located in the Libournais, in the heart of the Bordeaux region in France, this estate boasts a fascinating history. Although the seigneury dates back to the fifteenth century, Château Fombrauge was truly established as a wine estate in 1599 with its first harvest. Acquired in 1999 by entrepreneur Bernard Magrez, its current owner, this vast estate now combines respect for ancestral traditions with technological innovation. Promoted to Grand Cru Classé status in 2012, it embodies excellence and diversity, producing wines internationally renowned for their richness and elegance.
The vineyard
Covering 58.60 hectares, making it the largest Grand Cru Classé in the Saint-Emilion appellation, the vineyard extends across a plateau and hillsides spanning several communes. This exceptional area offers a mosaic of unique terroirs, made up of clay-limestone soils, starfish limestone, marl and molasse. Benefiting from a temperate oceanic climate and microclimates regulated by natural springs, the vines are farmed according to organic principles and hold High Environmental Value certification. The estate combines traditional methods, such as horse-drawn ploughing, with cutting-edge technologies such as drones.
The vintage
On the Right Bank, 1999 stood out for weather conditions that made it possible to harvest ripe, high-quality Merlot. For the estate, this year holds major historical significance: it marks the very first vintage produced under the leadership of Bernard Magrez. This pivotal harvest symbolises the starting point of a genuine qualitative and technical renaissance, heralding the transition to modernity and laying the foundations for the estate's future successes.
