Vinum

Restrained aromatics; straightforward attack, fruity structure, herbal, fresh tannins, only a bit fluffy on the finish at this stage, still very marked by the élevage, yet remains enjoyable.

Wine Spectator

James Molesworth

Warm in feel, with dark plum, cassis and cherry compote flavors forming the core. Generally open in feel, with light cocoa, tobacco and alder notes adding spine and texture to offset the tasty fruit. Best from 2021 through 2031. 10,833 cases made.

Decanter

A signature Bordeaux year – a ton of concentration but also balance – the magic combination that has built Bordeaux’s reputation over the centuries. This is a finely tuned wine, with a great tannic frame that holds the blackberry and bilberry fruit, laced with grilled turmeric and smoke. 90% new vats at this point, as the winery was pretty much finished.

James Suckling

Impressive aromas of fresh summer berries, slate and toasty oak. This has a very succulent array of ripe red plums and berries and delivers a smooth, long and appealingly grainy edge of very plush, flavorful tannins. A lot to like here. A blend of merlot, cabernet sauvignon and petit verdot. Try from 2021.

Vinous

Antonio Galloni

The 2016 Marquis de Terme is a deep, luscious wine, just as it was at en primeur. Dark red cherry, spice, tobacco, licorice and floral notes fill out the wine's layered frame effortlessly. Plush, forward and racy, the 2016 offers quite a bit of immediacy and overall appeal.

Elegant, silky, fresh and vibrant, the fruit is soft, polished, ripe and pure. If you look closely, you can already find floral nuances along with licorice, cherry, black raspberry and smoke. Give this 8–10 years and it is going to be a beauty!

Fine toast, coffee, dark berries, cassis, plum, cedar and tobacco. Dense, medium weight, elegant with ripe tannin, fine oak and a long lingering finish.

The outstanding 2016 Château Marquis de Terme is an attractive, elegant wine that has classic Margaux character. Black cherry and blackberry fruits, hints of graphite and smoky earth, and plenty of tobacco leaf all emerge from this medium-bodied effort, which has some firm tannins and a great finish. Give bottles 3–4 years to let these tannins chill out, and it should drink beautifully for 15+ years.

Weinwisser

Dark purple with a violet rim. An intoxicating, blueberry-driven bouquet with ripe blueberry and cassis, dense and concentrated, with violets and iris in the background. On the palate, substantial yet with a certain elegance; the upward trend continues.

Kunz barrel sample 17: mineral, dense, fresh bouquet, red and blue berries, herbs, chalk. Classic, dense, full palate with good fruit, fine tannins, powerful, sweet-toned aromatics, finely muscular structure, long, delicately bitter finish. Has room to improve.

The Wine Independent

Lisa Perrotti-Brown

The 2016 Marquis de Terme has a deep garnet color. It charges out of the gate with exuberant scents of warm cassis, baked plum, and boysenberries, plus suggestions of camphor, cumin seed, and vanilla pod. Medium-bodied, soft and juicy in the mouth, it has elegant black fruit and spicy flavors, with a soft-spoken finish.

La RVF

The 2016 takes the cru to new horizons. The wine has sap, lovely precision, and length. It only lacks a touch of brightness on the finish.

Le Figaro Vin

Black fruits, bramble, cherry. Generous palate, elegant tannins, lovely breed, Zan, beautiful fruit, moderately intense, long finish.

Garnet red with violet highlights. A very inviting and pleasant bouquet! Lovely fruity expression with notes of cherries and blackberries. With a bit of aeration, the nose gains in complexity. On the palate, the wine is slightly creamy, balanced, and endowed with fine-grained tannins that reveal themselves slowly. These are in harmony with the structure, which lends character to the entire palate. A pleasant, fresh wine that can already be enjoyed in its youth, yet has good aging potential.

Jean-Marc Quarin

Jean-Marc Quarin

Dark, intense, and beautiful color. A moderately aromatic nose, very fruity, smoky, and spicy, with a lovely cabernet sauvignon character. Delicate in texture on the attack, refined to the touch, present on the mid-palate, and perfumed, the wine caresses the palate. It finishes very pleasantly, flavorful, with a normal length.

Wine Enthusiast

Roger Voss

This relatively little-known estate is now performing well. In this vintage the wine has gained weight as well as blackberry fruits and rich tannins. Its balance is already there and the wine should develop to be drunk by 2023.

Description

A fine and delicate Margaux red wine

Chateau Marquis de Terme is a 4th Classified Growth of 1855 produced in the Margaux appellation. The 39.5-hectare vineyard benefits from vines aged 35 years on average, planted on Garonne gravel, composed of quartz and quartzite, as well as clayey gravel. The ageing of the wine is carried out in barrels (of which 50% are new barrels) over a period of 16 to 18 months, depending on the year. The 2016 vintage blends 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot.

After an extremely mild and rainy winter, leading to an early budburst, the following spring turned out to be fresh and just as humid. However, flowering took place at the perfect time, on June 6th, thanks to a small window of good weather and high temperatures. The strong rainfall in the spring contributed significant downy mildew pressure to veraison. By the end of June, climatic conditions were changing dramatically, with the arrival of extreme heat and drought. Water stress was observed on young vines and soils. The first berries appeared on August 1st and a delay in grape ripening forecasted late harvests. Drought caused some blockages in the vines, limiting the weight of the grapes. However, on September 13th, a heavy rainfall saved the harvest, allowing the vines to continue their maturation and increase yields. Finally, the harvest took place peacefully between September 29th and October 21st under ideal weather conditions.

At tasting, the Chateau Marquis de Terme 2016 reveals a fruity nose with aromas of black fruits (blackcurrant, blackberry). The tannins combine elegance, freshness and softness, resulting in a delicate and fine wine on the palate. The finish is marked by wonderful complexity from the barrel-ageing.
