Vinum

Among the year’s standouts: full-bodied, of utmost precision, very fruity as well, dense, juicy, long, will already give pleasure when young yet still has the capacity to age.

James Molesworth

A restrained style, with a beam of cherry, cassis, lilac and sandalwood flavors, revealing a good fleshy feel and solid depth throughout. Light perfume and tobacco hints give the finish some added range. No fireworks here, just balance and focus. Best from 2021 through 2032. 19,167 cases made.

Decanter

A top wine, especially for its excellent price/quality ratio. Great aromatic floral finesse. Regal elegance on the palate: smooth texture and fine-grained tannins underpin engaging notes of black cherry, liquorice, wild strawberry jam and cassis. A long finish.

James Suckling

A very suave, polished Margaux that delivers iodine and dark-stone aromas and a wealth of ripe, plush dark fruit that follows through to the palate in attractive, fleshy and juicy mode. Try from 2022.

The 2016 Prieuré-Lichine is all class. Floral, silky and nuanced to the core, the 2016 is a wine of pure and total seduction. Freshly cut flowers, vibrant red fruit and creamy tannins all add to the wine's undeniable allure. In 2016, Prieuré-Lichine is all class, not to mention one of the sleepers of the vintage. Don't miss it! Tasted two times.

Still a bit oaky, but once past the espresso, you find licorice, smoke, chocolate, toast and black cherries. Round, supple, and fruity, with an hour of air it’s even better. Drink from 2024–2046.

Pure nose with lifted aromas of red fruit, floral hints, red currant, plum and a herbal spiciness. Rather full palate, still a firm tannic backbone, crushed plum and tobacco flavours with a rather long finish.

The medium ruby-colored 2016 Château Prieuré-Lichine is a touch lean and firm, yet has impressive notes of spring flowers, damp underbrush, and loads of minerality. Possessing both red and black fruit, present tannins, and good balance, it’s a solid, enjoyable effort that would be even better with a touch more flesh.

Exuberant from the first sip, with an expansive feel through the mid-palate, and supple tannins that support the fruit without constraining it. Expect waves of blackberry, cassis, liquorice, smoked earth, campfire, pomegranate, crayon, delivering plenty of Left Bank character. A fascinating estate from a terroir perspective, as former owner Alexis Lichine bought small plots across the appellation when rebuilding it from the 4ha that remained when he first acquired it. Standing at 78ha today, the vines are divided into five sections around the Margaux appellation, and sub-divided into 150 plots. Étienne Charrier technical director since 2012, Stephane Derenoncourt consultant.

The 2016 Prieure-Lichine is deep garnet-colored. It bursts from the glass with vivacious scents of black cherries, blackcurrant pastilles, and lavender, leading to hints of menthol and pencil shavings. The medium-bodied palate is tightly wound with black fruit and savory flavors, supported by grainy tannins and plenty of freshness, finishing with impressive length.

The most complete in recent years, the most precise in its crafting, with impeccable body and substance and tremendous ageing potential, all within exemplary Margaux-style classicism.

La RVF

The 2016 is one of the gentlest of the appellation, with a graceful, fine, and digestible palate. A lithe yet pleasing wine.

Intense fruit, small black fruits. Refined, elegant, creamy tannins.

Garnet red with purple highlights. Prieuré-Lichine offers a complex nose, revealing notes from ageing in harmony with elegant fruity aromas of cherries and redcurrants. Subtle hint of liquorice wood. On the palate, the wine is tasty, juicy and well-balanced. It shows good aromatic intensity and tannins that provide a fine backbone on the finish. A pleasant wine that can already be enjoyed in its youth and has potential.

The wine stands out with a very fruity, pure and suave nose, and a melt-in-the-mouth, aromatic palate with a meticulous touch, good presence, and unmarked tannins. It’s very good.

With vineyards in the southern Margaux village of Cantenac, this estate has produced a deliciously juicy wine. The structure follows a straight line between the tannins and the intense fruit and acidity. The wine should age well, ready to drink from 2024.

Description

A balanced, dense and elegant red wine from Margaux

A 4th Classified Growth of 1855 produced under the Margaux appellation, Chateau Prieure- Lichine boasts a vineyard with a total area of 77.5 hectares. The vines, aged 30 years on average, are planted on Garonne gravel of the Günzian type. The wine is matured in oak barrels, with 50% new barrels and 50% barrels with one vintage. The 2016 vintage features a blend of 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot.

After a mild and rainy winter, spring brought average temperatures and precipitation, which allowed for the regular growth of the vineyard but also a high risk of mildew and powdery mildew. The month of June saw some rains, which had no consequence on the flowering of the vine. The summer was hot and marked by a great drought, with the gravelly soil showing strong water stress, quite risky for the young vines. However, on September 13th, a thunderstorm provided the vines 40 mm of rain, making possible the perfect maturity of the berries, as did the few rains in late September and mid-October. The harvest of this vintage took place from September 23rd to October 19th.

Upon tasting, the Château Prieure-Lichine 2016 combines balance, density and elegance. The acidity, more present than in the 2015 vintage, reveals an extremely harmonious ageing potential.
