Wine Spectator

James Molesworth

Fresh and racy, with a succulent edge as well as damson plum, red currant, lilac and savory notes that drive through expressively. Sleek finish. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Drink now through 2028. 6,500 cases made, 300 cases imported.

Decanter

Redcurrant, blueberry and cassis, with fairly high acidity that you can pick up from the fruit character on the nose, packed with juice. This has a fairly straightforward, old-school feel—tannins, menthol, bright fruit—and needs to soften further with ageing. Real purity of fruit. Good quality, tasted twice two weeks apart.

James Suckling

Blackcurrants, cassis, pine needles and oyster shells on the nose. Medium-bodied with firm, fine tannins. Linear and silky. Cabernet sauvignon, merlot and cabernet franc. Drink from 2023.

Flowers, herbs, spice and red fruits come through on the nose easily. On the palate, the wine is soft-textured, medium-bodied, fresh and already, disarmingly easy to taste and enjoy. The finish leaves you with energetic sweet and tart red berries. This is showing much better after the aging process. Drink from 2023-2034.

Dark core and a purple hue. Pure dark-fruited nose with violet, cassis and plum, no noticeable oak. Fairly dense, slightly austere palate with fresh acidity, savoury dark fruit and mild spices, fine material and length, still a bit youthful and restrained, needing another 1–2 years of ageing.

Medium-bodied, mid-weight, forward, and up-front, the 2019 Château Tour De Pez has a lighter ruby/purple color as well as attractive currant, sandalwood, and tobacco-like aromas and flavors. It's going to last for a decade.

The Wine Independent

Lisa Perrotti-Brown

The 2019 Tour de Pez is a blend of 63% Merlot, 28% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 9% Cabernet Franc. Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, it gives up notes of black raspberries, Morello cherries, and blackcurrant pastilles, followed by hints of pencil shavings and dried lavender. Medium-bodied, the palate is elegant and refreshing, with soft tannins and an energetic finish.

Yves Beck

Youthful bouquet revealing itself slowly. After a bit of aeration, it shows nuances of blackcurrant, raspberries, and grenadine—so plenty of freshness! Juicy on the palate, the wine is balanced and inviting. It’s quite easy-drinking, yet it also shows power. Not bad at all 😉

Logo on the cork: DIAM10 Dark, intense color. Moderately aromatic nose with ripe, fresh fruit. Soft, tasty palate that evolves very pleasantly, with medium length and no hard edges.

Description

A fragrant and velvety Cru Bourgeois from Saint-Estèphe

The estate
Acquired in 1989 by the Bouchara family, Château Tour de Pez has experienced a real renaissance thanks to the work undertaken at the property, both in the vineyard and in the winery. From vintage to vintage, this estate has stood out among the most important references of the Saint-Estèphe appellation thanks to its precise, high-quality wines. Château Tour de Pez is now classified a Cru Bourgeois of the Saint-Estèphe appellation, while also being a member of the Grand Cercle des Vins de Bordeaux. Bearing a widely recognised signature style that emphasises Merlot in their blend, the wines of Château Tour de Pez are elegant, with great ageing potential.

The vineyard
Enjoying a superb location in the Saint-Estèphe appellation, the Château Tour de Pez vineyard covers 30 hectares of vines. The terroir is mainly composed of Girondine gravel and clay-limestone soils.

The vintage
A chaotic year from a climatic point of view, 2019 nevertheless allowed for the harvest of high-quality fruit at Château Tour de Pez. A true winemaker’s vintage, 2019 required constant work and attention paid to the vines by the property's technical teams. The result exceeded expectations, with delicious and smooth Cabernet Sauvignon without a hint of bitterness.

The blend
Merlot (63%), cabernet sauvignon (28%), cabernet franc (9).

The tasting
Tasted en primeur, the Château Tour de Pez 2019 displays a ruby red colour, shimmering with purple reflections. The intensely fragrant nose is quite charming, with notes of ripe red fruit, like raspberry, further enhanced by fresh hints of menthol. On the palate, this wine displays a nice density, texture and roundness, along with a velvety tannic structure and tense finish. Truly an "iron fist in a velvet glove", the Château Tour de Pez 2019 is certainly a great success.
