The mineral and structured expression of a Premier Cru from Pommard
The estate
Founded in 1988 by Anne-Françoise Gros, Domaine A.F. Gros is a key name in Burgundy. Born from the division of a historic family estate, it now spans around 14 hectares across prestigious appellations. The estate is currently run by the second generation: Caroline Parent-Gros oversees general management and commercial affairs, while her brother Mathias Parent supervises viticulture and winemaking. The estate stands out for its environmentally conscious approach, practising integrated viticulture to reveal the authenticity of each terroir.
The vineyard
Located in the southern sector of the Pommard appellation, in France, the "Les Chanlins" premier cru plot benefits from an ideal transitional position. The terroir consists of limestone soils rich in iron oxide, giving the wine its characteristic minerality. The vines, over 80 years old, naturally produce limited yields, encouraging excellent concentration in the berries. The estate applies integrated viticulture methods here, with regular ploughing and meticulous plant management.
The vintage
2023 stands out as one of the hottest years ever recorded in the region, while also benefiting from abundant rainfall. This combination of heat and humidity created intense vegetative growth conditions, accompanied by fungal disease pressure that required constant attention throughout the season. These unusual climatic conditions nevertheless resulted in berries with excellent physiological ripeness.
Winemaking and ageing
For the Pommard 1er cru "Les Chanlins" 2023, the hand-harvested grapes undergo a five-day pre-fermentation cold soak at a controlled temperature. Fermentation then takes place over five to seven days, punctuated by daily, carefully measured punch-downs and pump-overs for gentle extraction. Ageing takes place in oak barrels for 12 to 18 months. The wine is finally bottled without fining or filtration to preserve its full complexity.
Grape variety
100% Pinot Noir.
