Description

Characteristics and Tasting Notes for the Coteaux-du-Layon 2023 from Domaine Belargus

Tasting

Appearance
The colour reveals a brilliant golden-yellow hue, adorned with subtle amber highlights.

Nose
Complex and generous, the nose exudes aromas of exotic fruits such as pineapple, mingled with scents of ripe yellow fruits like apricot. Delicate honeyed notes and subtle citrus touches round out this bouquet.

Palate
Smooth and unctuous, the palate seduces with its enveloping texture. This fruity richness is perfectly balanced by a bright acidity that carries the wine through to a persistent, harmonious finish.

Food and Wine Pairing

This sweet wine pairs wonderfully with fruity desserts such as apricot tart, tarte Tatin or an exotic fruit crumble. It also shines alongside sweet-and-savoury dishes, such as duck breast with fruit, honey-roasted poultry or foie gras with a mango chutney.

Serving and Ageing

To fully appreciate this Coteaux-du-Layon 2023, it is recommended to serve it at a temperature between 10 and 11°C. This wine can be enjoyed now, but it has the structure needed to age harmoniously in the cellar until around 2033.

The Fruity, Well-Balanced Expression of a Sweet Wine from the Coteaux du Layon Appellation

The Estate

Founded in 2018 by Ivan Massonnat, a former investor passionate about terroirs, Domaine Belargus quickly established itself as an unmissable reference in the Loire Valley. Located in Saint-Aubin-de-Luigné, at the heart of Anjou Noir, the estate came into being following the takeover of Jo Pithon's historic vines. Spanning a little over twenty hectares, the estate stands out for its exclusive focus on Chenin Blanc and its meticulous, parcel-by-parcel approach. Committed to preserving biodiversity, this ambitious project is restoring the great white wines of Anjou to their former glory.

The Vineyard

The grapes for this cuvée come from riverside plots spread across three villages within the Coteaux du Layon appellation: Beaulieu-sur-Layon, Saint-Lambert-du-Lattay and Saint-Aubin-de-Luigné. This unique terroir of Anjou Noir is characterised by predominantly schistous soils and benefits from the microclimate created by the river, encouraging optimal ripening of the berries. The vineyard is farmed according to organic principles, with official certification obtained in 2022, and continues its conversion to biodynamic farming under the Demeter label.

Winemaking and Ageing

The making of this Coteaux-du-Layon 2023 focuses on preserving the purity of the fruit and its freshness. Vinification is carried out traditionally in vats, followed by six months of ageing, also in vats, allowing the aromatic brightness and natural balance of this sweet wine to be preserved without the influence of oak.

Grape Variety

This wine is made exclusively from Chenin Blanc (100%).
