Description

Tasting characteristics and advice for the Corton Grand Cru "Le Clos du Château" Monopole 2020 from Domaine Caroline Frey

Tasting

Color
The color shows a deep ruby hue with slightly purplish highlights, typical of high-quality young Pinot Noir wines.

Nose
The nose is concentrated and indulgent, dominated by intense black-fruit aromas. With aeration, woody and toasty notes emerge, reflecting well-managed aging.

Palate
On the palate, the fruit quite literally bursts forth, delivering a lively, energetic expression. Black-fruit notes mingle harmoniously with woody and toasty touches, creating a rare balance between richness and finesse. Spicy aromas appear on the finish, adding length and refinement to the whole.

Food and wine pairings

This Corton Grand Cru pairs perfectly with game meats, game birds, and wild animals such as wild boar or venison. It also elegantly complements roast beef and roasted red meats served with a light sauce. Wine-braised dishes, such as stews and braises, are natural partners. For cheese, opt for aged, slightly pungent cheeses such as Époisses or blue cheeses.

Serving and cellaring

The Corton Grand Cru "Le Clos du Château" Monopole 2020 is ideally enjoyed at a temperature between 16 and 18°C. This wine offers exceptional aging potential and can be cellared until around 2040.

An exceptional Burgundian monopole from a historic terroir

The estate

Acquired in 2014 by the Frey family, Château Corton C. was run by Caroline Frey from 2015 to 2024. This historic estate in Burgundy, located in Aloxe-Corton, spans seven hectares across thirteen prestigious climats, including the appellations Corton, Corton-Charlemagne, Meursault, Volnay and Pommard. A winemaker trained at the Institut d'Œnologie de Bordeaux, Caroline Frey transformed the estate by certifying the entire vineyard as organic farming as early as 2021. Since 2024, the property has been managed by Delphine Frey, Caroline’s sister, who continues the estate’s commitment to excellence and sustainable practices.

The vineyard

The Corton Grand Cru "Le Clos du Château" Monopole comes from a single 0.33-hectare plot located within the very grounds of Château de Corton C., in the heart of the village of Corton. Planted in 1973, this Pinot Noir vine grows on soils made up of ochre clays and limestone, creating ideal conditions for the varietal’s expression. Its monopole status—meaning the plot is entirely owned by a single estate—makes it a remarkable rarity in the Burgundian landscape.

The vintage

The 2020 vintage in Burgundy was marked by exceptional weather conditions. After a mild, wet winter, the summer proved consistently hot and dry, with around half the usual rainfall. A dramatic heatwave in early August caused sugar levels to soar, leading to extraordinarily early harvests. Significant millerandage, combined with heat, drought and unusually strong sunshine, produced concentrated berries with thickened skins. The resulting red wines show exceptional color depth and a dense yet well-balanced tannic structure, with remarkably well-preserved acidity despite the heat.

Vinification and aging

The Corton Grand Cru "Le Clos du Château" Monopole 2020 is vinified using methods that respect the terroir, favoring a low-intervention approach. Aging takes place in oak barrels, bringing woody and toasty notes while preserving the pure expression of fruit and terroir. This aging technique aims to reveal the essence of the terroir without overwhelming the wine with excessive oak influence.
