Description

Characteristics and tasting notes of De Battre Mon Coeur S'est Arrêté 2024 Domaine du Clos des Fées

Tasting notes

Colour
The colour reveals a deep, dark ruby hue, with violet highlights reflecting a fine concentration.

Nose
Very vibrant, the bouquet opens with aromas of black and red fruits such as blackcurrant, blackberry and redcurrant. It then evolves towards spicy notes of pepper and liquorice stick, underlined by hints of garrigue. With aeration, a pronounced minerality marked by graphite and limestone emerges, sometimes accompanied by subtle smoky nuances.

Palate
The attack is full-bodied and voluminous, releasing generous fruit bursting with freshness. The structure relies on fine, silky and elegant tannins that bring perfect balance without any harshness. The mid-palate, full of energy, combines power and vivacity. The finish, remarkably persistent, lingers on peppery and liquorice notes with a delicate mineral salinity.

Food and wine pairing

This red wine pairs perfectly with hearty meats, offal or slow-cooked dishes. The estate particularly recommends serving it with rabbit terrine, pork rillons, calf's liver deglazed with balsamic vinegar, or a spiced lamb shank. It will also enhance a wild boar stew or a beef fillet with a morel sauce.

Service and storage

De Battre Mon Coeur S'est Arrêté 2024 can be enjoyed now, taking care to decant it, but it also has excellent aging potential, allowing it to be kept until around 2030.

Other characteristics

This wine stands out for its early bottling, carried out just five to six months after harvest, and for a light filtration designed to preserve all the energy and vivacity of its youth. The soils it comes from also have a particularly low pH.

The mineral, fresh expression of a high-altitude Syrah in Roussillon

The estate

Officially founded in 1998, Domaine du Clos des Fées is located in the heart of Roussillon, in the Agly valley. Now at the helm of the estate, Hervé and Claudine Bizeul oversee this vineyard of around 30 hectares spread across more than a hundred plots with highly varied terroirs. A former sommelier and journalist, Hervé Bizeul has established the estate as one of the region's benchmarks through a pragmatic approach that combines respect for biodiversity, rigorous manual work and a refusal of dogma, in order to produce authentic wines with a strong sense of identity.

The vineyard

Coming from a plot of around three hectares acquired in 2017 in the commune of Lesquerde, this cuvée belongs to the great terroir of the Côtes du Roussillon Villages. The vines, around thirty years old and pruned in goblet fashion, are trained on stakes at an altitude of 600 metres. They thrive within a granite amphitheatre rich in quartz, mica and feldspar. This terroir, swept by the icy Tramontane wind for more than 200 days a year, offers excellent drainage and encourages optimal ripening while preserving great freshness. Work here is entirely manual and highly meticulous.

The vintage

2024 marks a third consecutive season of climatic challenges for the estate. Following the severe drought of previous years, modest rainfall brought temporary relief, although levels remained below average. The growing cycle was above all marked by extraordinary heat during the growing season. These conditions led to the formation of small berries with very little juice, considerably reducing yields, but allowing for simultaneous and perfect phenolic ripeness across all grape varieties.

Winemaking and aging

The grapes for De Battre Mon Coeur S'est Arrêté 2024 are harvested by hand into small crates, with the aim of achieving technological rather than phenolic ripeness in order to preserve the fresh fruit character. In the cellar, fermentation is rapid, accompanied by vigorous and frequent pumping-over. Maceration lasts around twenty days with a submerged cap. After a spontaneous malolactic fermentation and clarification through successive rackings, aging takes place exclusively in stainless steel tanks for five to six months, with no exposure to oak, in order to preserve aromatic purity.
