Jancis Robinson

Matthew Hayes

0.96 ha (2.37 acres). The majority (0.79 ha) planted in 1955 and 1958. Cask sample. Mid ruby. Sweet red-cherry and raspberry fruit complemented by vanilla and spice. Quite indulgent in its way, with plenty of intense spice on the long finish. Plenty of grand-cru concentration and power. (MH)

Description

Characteristics and Tasting Tips for the Mazy-Chambertin Grand Cru 2022 from Domaine Henri Rebourseau

Tasting

Appearance

This grand cru reveals a deep, brilliant red colour with black cherry highlights, typical of a Pinot Noir from old vines and naturally low yields.

Nose

The nose unfolds in a complex register of red and black fruits, with blackcurrant, cherry and raspberry, enhanced by notes of liquorice and cherry stones, as well as touches of spice and forest floor.

Palate

The palate is opulent and powerful, underpinned by a firm tannic structure and great finesse that rivals that of Clos de Bèze. The whole offers a dense, long-lasting texture, in which the fruit blends with a spicy, mineral backbone characteristic of the terroir.

Food and Wine Pairing

This wine is ideally suited to roasted or braised red meats, such as rib of beef or rack of lamb, as well as feathered or furred game, such as venison or pheasant. It also pairs very well with hard cooked-curd cheeses, such as a well-aged Comté.

Serving and Cellaring

The Mazy-Chambertin Grand Cru 2022 is best served at a temperature between 15 and 17°C. Aerating it beforehand, either by decanting or simply by opening the bottle a few hours before serving, is recommended to allow this still young wine to reveal itself fully.

A Gevrey-Chambertin Grand Cru Balancing Power and Finesse from Domaine Henri Rebourseau

The Estate

The Domaine Henri Rebourseau was founded in the 19th century in Gevrey-Chambertin, in Burgundy, when Jean-Baptiste Rebourseau brought together several grand cru parcels that have remained in the same family ever since. Since December 2018, Martin and Olivier Bouygues have been the majority shareholders, alongside the de Surrel family, with Bénigne and Louis de Surrel overseeing management under the supervision of Hervé Berland. The estate, which is committed to biodynamics, farms thirteen hectares spread across village appellation, premier cru and prestigious grand cru vineyards.

The Vineyard

Mazy-Chambertin, also spelled Mazis-Chambertin, is one of the nine grands crus of Gevrey-Chambertin, located just beside Clos de Bèze. The estate's parcel lies on a gentle slope sheltered from the north winds by the village, on crinoidal limestone soil from the Lower Bajocian. The vines have an average age of 41 years, a guarantee of concentration and complexity for this Pinot Noir.

Winemaking and Ageing

The winemaking of the Mazy-Chambertin Grand Cru 2022 combines traditional techniques with modern equipment, in order to preserve the natural character of the grapes and their expression of terroir. The ageing, carried out through slow maturation, aims to develop the wine's aromatic complexity and stability before bottling.
