Description
Characteristics and Tasting Notes for Gula Ana 2023 from Domaine Luneau-Papin
Tasting Notes
Appearance
This wine displays a beautiful pale gold colour, remarkably brilliant.
Nose
Intense and wonderfully complex, the bouquet reveals superb aromas of citrus, white-fleshed fruits and flowers. The whole is elegantly underscored by mineral, stony notes, occasionally touched with delicate smokiness.
Palate
The attack is ample, dense and solidly structured. A magnificent saline thread stretches the wine across the palate, offering delicious notes of candied lemon and ripe fruit. The remarkably long finish is carried by particularly invigorating bitter notes.
Food and Wine Pairings
This great white wine for fine dining pairs wonderfully with noble fish or shellfish prepared in sauce, such as lobster served with baby vegetables and a shellfish jus. It will also beautifully complement prestigious poultry, such as a Bresse hen cooked in a cocotte, as well as mature cheeses.
Serving and Cellaring
It is recommended to serve the Gula Ana 2023 cuvée at a temperature of 12°C. With its exceptional wine structure, this wine has great cellaring potential and can be expected to evolve favourably in the cellar for over a decade.
The Mineral Elegance of a Muscadet Sèvre et Maine from Domaine Luneau-Papin
The Estate
Founded in the 1990s through the union of two family heritages, Domaine Luneau-Papin is an essential name in the Loire Valley. Now run by Marie and Pierre-Marie Luneau, the estate spans 27 hectares at the heart of the Nantes vineyards. The domaine stands out for its meticulous plot-by-plot approach and its deep commitment to organic and biodynamic farming. By combining historic tradition with modern quality standards, the current owners have elevated their cuvées among the greatest white wines for fine dining and cellaring in the region.
The Vineyard
The La Butte de la Roche plot overlooks the magnificent Goulaine marshes, within the Muscadet Sèvre et Maine appellation. This unique terroir, located in the village of Loroux-Bottereau, rests on an extremely rare geology composed of weathered peridotite and serpentinite bedrock. The vines, planted in 1974 at a high density of 6,500 vines per hectare, are farmed biodynamically using natural preparations, with no synthetic products whatsoever. Short pruning in simple Guyot style and partial replanting with stakes on the rocky ridge ensure exceptional grape quality.
The Vintage
The year 2023 began with a spring and early summer marked by intense heat. Welcome rainfall then came to refresh the vines in July and early August. Finally, high temperatures returned at the end of the summer season and continued throughout the harvest. These weather conditions produced berries that perfectly reflect the singularity of the terroir, with the sun's influence beautifully balanced.
Winemaking and Ageing
Following an extremely careful sorting carried out directly in the vineyard, the grapes for the Gula Ana 2023 cuvée undergo spontaneous alcoholic fermentation, triggered solely by indigenous yeasts. The wine then undergoes extended ageing for 21 months on its lees, in underground tanks. No racking is carried out before bottling, which is scheduled for July 2025.
