Description
Characteristics and tasting notes of Volnay 1er cru "Les Pitures" 2023 Domaine Pierre Morey
Tasting
Colour
With a beautiful intensity, the colour reveals a hue ranging from vibrant ruby to pale garnet.
Nose
The bouquet opens with a seductive fragrance of floral aromas of peony and violet, complemented by refreshing notes of aniseed and liquorice.
Palate
Juicy and mouth-watering, the attack offers wonderful energy with remarkable breadth and depth. The palate reveals a structured framework while retaining the floral elegance typical of its appellation.
Food and wine pairing
This red wine pairs beautifully with roasted poultry such as chicken or duck, as well as with mushroom-based dishes such as risotto or crostini. It also goes very well with lean red meats such as filet mignon, herb-crusted lamb chops, or a traditional coq au vin.
Service and storage
This great wine can be enjoyed young for its fruity profile, but also has excellent ageing potential, allowing it to develop favourably for around ten years.
The depth and elegance of a great Volnay wine
The estate
Based in Meursault, the Morey family has been cultivating vines in Burgundy since 1793. Domaine Pierre Morey was officially founded in 1971 by Pierre Morey. A pioneer of biodynamics, the estate began its conversion as early as 1992. Today, the domaine is run by Anne Morey, who manages day-to-day operations, supported by her father Pierre as co-manager. Since 2020, the third generation has joined the venture with Jean-Victor Morey. The estate stands out for its minimal-intervention approach, seeking to express the authenticity of each terroir.
The vineyard
The Pitures plot is located halfway up the slope of the Volnay hillside, in France, between the renowned climats of Clos des Ducs and Champans. This distinctive terroir is characterised by a high proportion of limestone, with calcareous marl on the upper section and harder limestone further down the slope. This particular geology, combined with the altitude, gives rise to wines that are often more robust and full-bodied than the usual profile of the appellation. The vineyard is cultivated according to the principles of biodynamic farming, promoting soil life and biodiversity.
The vintage
2023 was marked by variable weather conditions, with periods of intense heat and a heatwave at harvest time. Fortunately, a generous harvest helped maintain a good balance, avoiding excessive concentration in the berries. This vintage thus offers wines with a juicy profile, which are particularly appealing from an early age while retaining a fine capacity for further development.
Winemaking and ageing
True to the estate's philosophy, winemaking is carried out with minimal intervention to allow the terroir to fully express itself. The wine is bottled without fining or filtration.
