Domaine Zind-Humbrecht : Pinot Gris Grand cru "Clos Saint Urbain Rangen de Thann" 2020

The 2020 Pinot Gris Rangen de Thann Clos Saint Urbain offers a clear and pure, smoky or flinty bouquet with dominant ripe seed-fruit aromas. Full-bodied, lush and piquant on the palate, this is a rich, luscious, round but persistently salty, enormously powerful Rangen with some burnt milk flavors on the finish. It's impressive but not that fascinating or more stimulating than the Riesling. Bottled with 13.6% stated alcohol plus eight grams per liter of residual sugar and a natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in April 2022.

Solidly built and full-bodied, this expressive white reveals red apple and quince flavors that are ripe, round and gilded with ginger and cardamom. The long, juicy, minerally finish shows intrigue, thanks to honeyed orange peel and dried green herbs. Concentrated and delicious. Drink now through 2030. 40 cases imported.

A smoky and concentrated nose, on the palate a saline thread from start to finish, you taste the rawness of volcanic rock full force. It needs a little time to refine its oily texture.
