Wine Spectator

Kristen Bieler

This blockbuster is stunning in power and complexity. Thick, dark, concentrated, and chewy, with flavors of cherry preserves, salted black licorice and macerated plum, forming a brooding, well-meshed core. Spice, tobacco and mesquite ash notes weave through, adding depth and length. Delicious now, this will only improve for those who have the patience to cellar. Best from 2025 through 2045. 50 cases imported.

Decanter

The fruit does just about match the oak this year. This has the rounded, muscular form of Hermitage, with very bright, ripe berry fruit, gently saline and long. Tannins are just a bit massy and extracted. Certainly impressive in depth, length and volume. At the start of its 42 months in new oak barriques. Old vines from Les Bessards, Les Greffieux, L'Ermite and Les Murets.

Enormously ripe and dense, this is an imposing Hermitage with huge black fruit character, wrapped around a very compact tannic core. Some licorice, bitter chocolate and roasted coffee beans at the very long, structured finish. Needs some time, but already impresses from the first sniff! From four plots on the hill of Hermitage. Matured in 100% new oak for 42 months. Drinkable now, but best from 2025.

The 2019 Ermitage Ex-Voto is a head-turner. Prominent dark cherry compote and smoked meat race out of the glass. Violet, tobacco, crushed rocks, cedar and blackcurrant add more layers. Medium- to full-bodied and dense, the 2019 ranks among the most seductive renditions of this cuvée ever made—a hedonistic treat.

Just a hint of oak remains, so now, you can find all the dark, red fruits, smoke, and peppery spices with ease. The palate is full, and intense, with enough licorice to fill an entire box. The wine is supple, deep, long, balanced, and intense. As long as it is, you want even more, as the fruit is perfectly ripe, and the finish is close to seamless, allowing you to enjoy all of its peppery, smoky, blackberries, and black cherries. For the best experience, let it rest just a bit or give it 1 or 2 hours in the decanter. Drink from 2030-2055.

Bettane+Desseauve

The fruit aromas are slightly jammy—this is the sunny side of 2019, more pronounced in Hermitage than in Côte Rôtie—yet the tannins are superb, both straight and caressing. Length. Precision.

Description

Tasting characteristics and recommendations for the 2019 Ex Voto from E. Guigal

Tasting

Appearance

The wine displays a dark, almost black hue, characteristic of a concentrated Syrah from a great vintage.

Nose

Complex and powerful, the nose reveals intense aromas of black fruits, alongside notes of leather and licorice. Fragrances of oriental spices mingle with woody, toasted nuances from the extended aging.

Palate

The palate stands out for its massive structure and remarkable concentration. The tannins, powerful yet elegant, support a dense, deep core that reflects the exceptional character of the vintage.

Food and wine pairings

This outstanding wine pairs perfectly with fine red meats such as roast leg of lamb or wild boar stew. It also matches well with richly sauced dishes and aged hard cheeses.

Serving and cellaring

The 2019 Ex Voto has tremendous aging potential and will evolve beautifully over several decades. Decanting for at least one hour is recommended to fully appreciate its aromatic complexity.

A powerful red Ermitage from an exceptional sun-filled vintage

The estate

Founded in 1946 in Ampuis by Étienne Guigal, the E. Guigal house has established itself as an essential benchmark of the northern Rhône Valley. Now run by Philippe Guigal, representing the third family generation, the estate remains independent and family-owned. Internationally recognized for its prestigious cuvées and its expertise in aging in oak barrels, E. Guigal farms seventy-five hectares of vines across the region’s finest terroirs.

The vineyard

Ex Voto comes from a blend of the most prestigious parcels in the Ermitage appellation: les Bessards, les Greffieux, les Murets and l'Hermite. These exceptional parcels, set on steep hillsides overlooking the Rhône, benefit from optimal exposure and complex soils made up of granite, loess, sand and clay. The vines, several decades old, send their roots deep into these outstanding terroirs, allowing a mineral, concentrated expression of the fruit.

The vintage

The 2019 vintage was marked by exceptional weather conditions, with generous sunshine throughout the growing cycle. This sun-filled year encouraged optimal ripening, producing wines of remarkable power and concentration, with an impressive tannic structure and outstanding aging potential.

Winemaking and aging

The 2019 Ex Voto is produced exclusively from Syrah, hand-harvested from selected parcels. After vinification, the wine is aged for forty months in entirely new oak barrels, an exceptionally long period that allows the wine to develop aromatic complexity while harmoniously integrating the oak tannins with those of the grape.
