Wine Spectator

James Molesworth

A singed tobacco leaf note weaves through a core of gently steeped red and black cherry fruit. Offers singed cedar and charcoal hints on the finish. Shows the burly ripeness of the vintage. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Drink now through 2028. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. 6,000 cases made, 1,500 cases imported.

Decanter

Smells deep and heady, so perfumed and vibrant on the nose – really expressive with vanilla, milk chocolate, blackcurrants and floral notes. Smooth and succulent, juicy, alive and expressive on the palate, lovely fruit purity with some creamy edges as well as chalky, saline notes. Clean and clear, streamlined with freshness and touches of blueberry. Well balanced and presented, an appealing weight on the palate too, crunchy, almost chewy. Friendly, accessible and so drinkable. Lots of personality. 3.06 total acidity, 3.90 pH. 77 IPT. 0.4% Petit Verdot completes the blend.

67% Merlot, 29% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3.6% Cabernet Franc, 0.4% Petit Verdot. Cask sample. Fruit-driven and generous, supple and fresh. Lively fruit with well-integrated tannins. Continues in a more refined vein. (JL)

The 2022 G d'Estournel is a powerful, dense wine. A blast of dark-toned fruit, leather, licorice, espresso and cloves is front and center. This Merlot-based Haut-Médoc very much shows the natural intensity of a very warm and dry growing season in its volume and overall presence. The 2022 is big, bold and beautiful. Time in the glass releases the aromatics, providing a clue of what is to come with aging.

Falstaff

Falstaff

Dark ruby, opaque core, purple reflections, subtle brightening on the rim. Ripe black berry fruit, blackberry and liquorice echo, subtle hints of tobacco and herbs, a touch of nougat. Juicy, black cherries, good complexity, freshly structured, mineral and persistent, discreet chocolate aftertaste, already accessible.

Aged a year in barrel and 67% Merlot, 29% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, the 2022 G D'Estournel is a hidden little gem in the vintage that offers loads of character. Black cherries, saddle leather, spicy flowers, and savory herb notes all shine in this charming, delicious, medium-bodied Médoc, which has a round, supple mouthfeel and a great finish. It will drink nicely over the coming decade.

Weinwisser

Delicate, red-berry bouquet with dark noble wood, Brazilian tobacco and tarragon. Medium, elegant palate with a soft texture and well-supported drive. Aromatic finish of wild cherry, rosewood and sandy astringency.

A slab of liquorice and nutmeg, a powerful, concentrated sweet black cherry wine with plenty of tannic grip and slightly spiky acidity. Knitted down, more so than during En Primeur, clearly ambitious, with white pepper spice studding the palate, 20% new oak. Earliest harvest since 1989, from September 16 to 27. Heavy bottle.

Le Figaro Vin

A sparkling, bold nose carried by notes of blue fruit—juicy and sapid. On the palate, the wine is fresh, round, and flavorful, supported by grippy tannins on the finish.

Enticing fruity intensity with aromas of black berries, mint, and licorice. Slightly creamy on the attack, the wine has compact, somewhat suave tannins that deliver vigor and freshness. A gourmet, powerful, and elegant wine that can be enjoyed from its youth.

The wine shows a deep ruby colour with slight purple highlights. The nose is juicy, enveloping, very fruity and indulgent. It reveals concentrated notes of morello cherry, tangy red cherry, blackcurrant, wild blackberry, wild strawberry and black plum, with a cocoa, toasted and spicy touch (toasted hazelnut, a hint of coffee and vanilla), as well as a mineral graphite backbone. A delicate, juicy and airy nose. The palate is silky yet firm, with a mineral graphite framework and a pleasant coffee bitterness on the attack. Flavours of blackcurrant, morello cherry, wild raspberry and wild strawberry unfold, layered with notes of vanilla, toasted hazelnut, liquorice and white pepper in the background. The tannins are chalky, fine and well-structured. The finish is savoury, persistent and chocolatey, with notes of dried morello cherry and fresh cranberries, along with a pleasant bitterness. An elegant, airy wine with a fresh, tangy fruit core.
