This is a blend of Tempranillo and Graciano that was first produced in 2012, but because no 2016 was produced, I tasted the 2015 and 2017. The 2015 Cerro Las Cuevas was produced with grapes from the zone of Leza in open-top vats and matured in new oak barrels. This is the last vintage of the old profile, as the wine changed tremendously in 2017. This feels quite classical to be in the more "modern" range, as power and ripe Tempranillo dominate the blend, with generous oak that requires time in bottle to polish its tannins. 4,225 bottles produced.

Complex, nicely curated oak and impressively ripe dark-plum and cassis aromas here. The palate has a lot of fine, long and smoothly cast tannins. Very impressive depth and density, bathed in ripe dark-plum and cherry flavors. Drink now or hold.

Description

The power and freshness of a fine Rioja wine

The Cerro Las Cuevas 2015 is from a selection of plots located near the village of Leza in the Rioja Alavesa region at the foot of the Sierra de Cantabria mountains. It is from the Gómez Cruzado winery and represents all the typicity of its exceptional terroir. This magnificent region of Spain bathed in the influence from the Atlantic imprints freshness on this exceptional vintage.

The old vines of Tempranillo (95%) and Graciano (5%) make up the Cerro Las Cuevas 2015 to give a complexity that testifies to its terroir.

With monumental structure, the Cerro Las Cuevas 2015 reveals the typicality of its calcareous soil. The Cerro Las Cuevas 2015 reveals the beauty of a Rioja vintage with its intense aromatics, freshness and minerality, all of which give a personality shining through with power and balance. An emblematic wine from Bodega Gómez Cruzado.
