Wine Spectator

MaryAnn Worobiec

Crisp and expressive, showing fresh notes of fennel pollen, lemon curd and Asian pear, with elegant details of citrus blossom, dried ginger and lime zest on the finish. Viognier, Marsanne and Roussanne. Drink now. 704 cases made.

Decanter

Strong aromatics on the nose and palate, floral and summery with pear, apricot and lemon zest alongside some fresh herbal, peppery notes. Round and full on the palate but offering a delicate balance between freshness and approachability and power and structure. Precision winemaking here, this feels well constructed with the ability to age. First produced in 1999 as a partner to Rubicon, this is a blend of the estate’s three white Rhône varietals; 38% Viognier, 35% Marsanne and 27% Roussanne. Wines are aged for eight months on the lees, 60% stainless steel, 40% French oak.

James Suckling

Aromas of lemon curd, dried flowers, apricot and toast on the nose. It’s medium- to full-bodied with tangy acidity and a waxy texture. Almonds, waxed lemon and stones on the finish. Viognier, marsanne and roussanne. Drink now.

Jancis Robinson

Tom Parker MW

38% Viognier, 35% Marsanne, 27% Roussanne. Pale lemon colour. Soft pear, walnut and beeswax on the nose. The palate follows, with a rounded texture and fairly soft acids. Round and plump, it should be drunk in youth. (TP)

Weinwisser

Inglenook’s white Blancaneaux is composed of 38% Viognier, 35% Marsanne and 27% Roussanne. It comes across as very spicy, idiosyncratic and also a bit hearty, showing slightly dull tannins that could come from oak, perhaps as a flavor nod to a Péssac-Léognan. The Viognier doesn’t stand out aromatically, as a slightly green edge prevents the development of clear varietal character.

Description

The elegance and typicity of a white wine from California by Inglenook

The estate

Located in the Rutherford AVA in Napa Valley, Inglenook is a wine estate founded in 1879 by Gustave Niebaum, a Finnish sea captain. The estate's wines quickly earned recognition for their quality and richness.

From 1975 onwards, Francis and Eleanor Coppola gradually acquired the entire estate, with the ambition of making Inglenook an iconic benchmark among California wines. The couple launched major renovations of the facilities and brought in renowned winemaker André Tchelistcheff as a consultant, along with Philippe Bascaules of Château Margaux to oversee winemaking.

A pioneering estate constantly in search of innovation, Inglenook stands out for its distinctive and authentic expression of great terroirs, crafting delicate, refined and perfectly balanced wines. These wines have been acclaimed by numerous critics, as illustrated in 1990 when Wine Spectator awarded a perfect score of 100/100 to the Inglenook Cabernet Sauvignon 1941.

The vineyard

Inglenook tends a 95-hectare vineyard that has been certified organic since 1991. The vineyard's varied topography reflects the mosaic of terroirs found in Napa Valley and contributes to Inglenook's distinctive character. Since 2015, the estate has been carrying out an ambitious programme to replant an average of 2% of the vineyard each year, ensuring its continual renewal.

The wine

Produced since 1999, Inglenook's Blancaneaux is a California white wine made from a blend of three Rhône Valley grape varieties, grown on estate parcels that enjoy morning sunshine as well as the cooling shade of Mount St. John in the mid-afternoon. The body and minerality imparted by Marsanne and Roussanne combine with the intense tropical fruit aromas of Viognier.

The vintage

Winter and early spring were marked by heavy rainfall. A hot summer was followed by a period of mild temperatures from August to early September, favouring even, high-quality ripening of the berries.

Vinification and ageing

Inglenook's Blancaneaux 2019 was aged for 8 months on its lees in stainless steel tanks (60%) and French oak barrels (40%), 22% of which were new.

Blend

Inglenook's Blancaneaux 2019 is a blend of 38% Viognier, 35% Marsanne and 27% Roussanne.

Tasting

Nose
Elegant and complex, the nose blends floral (rose, linden blossom) and fruity (pear, apricot, lychee) fragrances with honeyed notes.

Palate
The palate seduces with its roundness, its freshness and its long, graceful finish.

Ageing

This wine can be cellared until 2025 to allow its full aromatic range to develop.
