Decanter

This Corton-Charlemagne retains the stamp of Jean-Michel Chartron's winemaking and its Côte de Beaune identity, yet it is quite distinct from the wines of Puligny. The exotic aromas range from apricot and nectarine to pomelo and passionfruit. The texture is sturdy and dense, but there is enough structure to balance the richness, albeit in a different register. The grapes are from a small domaine-owned parcel supplemented with grapes exchanged with another grower nearby. This wine will open three to five years after release and should age well.

Neal Martin

The 2022 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru is another that is quite reductive on the nose, but it is not as nuanced as Tollot-Beaut's own Corton-Charlemagne, just obscuring some of the terroir expression and rendering it a tad predictable. The palate is well balanced with a brisk, slightly creamy-textured entry. But it does not convince in terms of complexity, lacks the flair and pedigree of a top Corton-Charlemagne, plus it feels a tad short on the finish. Bottled under Diam 30. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.

Description

Characteristics and tasting notes of the Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru 2022 Jean Chartron

Tasting

Colour
With a beautiful golden hue, this wine reveals a seductive intensity.

Nose
The nose stands out for its remarkable freshness. It reveals citrus notes such as grapefruit and candied lemon, combined with green apple aromas, delicate floral touches and a complex minerality reminiscent of gunflint.

Palate
On the palate, this wine offers a generous volume and an assertive presence, without any heaviness. A beautiful acidity brings tension and supports the fresh citrus flavours. The finish, of impressive length, is marked by a textured minerality.

Food and wine pairing
This wine pairs perfectly with foie gras, shellfish such as lobster, as well as white-fleshed fish. It also goes wonderfully with poultry in cream sauce, mushroom dishes or blue cheeses.

Service and storage
For optimal tasting, it is recommended to serve this wine at a temperature between 12 and 14°C, decanting it 30 to 60 minutes beforehand. While it can be enjoyed in its youth, it will reveal its full complexity after a few years of cellaring.

The purity and mineral tension of a great white wine

The estate
Founded in 1859 by Jean-Édouard Dupard, the Jean Chartron estate is a historic figure, located in the heart of Puligny-Montrachet. Today, the fifth generation, embodied by Jean-Michel Chartron and his sister Anne-Laure, oversees a 14.5-hectare vineyard. Certified High Environmental Value, the estate stands out for its respectful approach to the terroir and its minimal-intervention winemaking. Thanks to rigorous management and a constant pursuit of quality, the estate produces wines renowned for their purity, finesse and ability to faithfully express the singularity of their appellations.

The vineyard
The terroir of Corton-Charlemagne is characterised by deep soils composed of limestone, marl and clay, offering excellent water retention capacity. The vines, averaging around 40 years old, benefit from sustainable viticultural practices, thus encouraging deep rooting and an authentic mineral expression.

The vintage
The year 2022 stands out for its extreme climatic conditions, marking one of the hottest and driest years on record. After a cool winter and a mild early spring, a frost episode in April caused limited damage. Flowering took place ideally in May. June and July were marked by intense heat and drought, fortunately tempered by welcome rainfall at the end of June. This rain allowed the vines to maintain a perfect balance right up to the harvest, resulting in healthy grapes with optimal ripeness.

Winemaking and aging
The philosophy favours minimal intervention to preserve the brightness of the fruit. For this vintage, the use of oak is measured, with a reduced proportion of new oak barrels. This approach helps highlight the minerality of the terroir rather than the influence of wood.
