Decanter

Lovely cherry fruit with hints of lavender and rosemary. The texture is silky and dense, almost fat. There is more clay here, and less limestone than in Les Cras, and the tannic structure is not as firm. The grapes are from Drouhin's massive 6.75ha here, not far from Pommard; they are partially destemmed and fermented on native yeasts before ageing in cask (25% new) for 14–18 months.

Cask sample. Such a sweet, easy nose! Smells ready to drink! Creamy (almost a little yogurty). Red fruit in abundance, lactic tang in abundance. The tannins circle and pull the wine in like a drawstring. Sour cherries, rose hip, red-plum skin, salt. Something wonderfully pencil-line, quinine-cut savoury on the finish. I love the precision of this wine. (TC)

Description

Characteristics and tasting tips for the Beaune 1er Cru "Clos des Mouches" 2023 by Joseph Drouhin

Tasting

Colour
The wine displays a deep ruby red colour with a beautiful brilliance.

Nose
Intense and remarkably fresh, the nose reveals aromas of ripe red fruit such as morello cherry, raspberry and blackberry. It is enhanced by notes of sweet spices and orange zest, along with subtle smoky hints that evolve towards liquorice.

Palate
The attack is clean and fleshy, opening onto a dense, warm palate. Firm yet noble tannins support flavours of black fruit and plum. The whole retains a remarkable mineral, chalky freshness that draws out the finish.

Serving and ageing

For optimal enjoyment, this wine is best served at a temperature of around 16°C. This Beaune 1er Cru "Clos des Mouches" 2023 shows great ageing potential and can be enjoyed until around 2048.

The intensity and elegance of a great red wine from Burgundy

The estate

Founded in 1880 in Beaune, France, Maison Joseph Drouhin is an iconic name in Burgundy. This family estate, which now covers 100 hectares across the most prestigious appellations, is run by the fourth generation, headed by Frédéric Drouhin. A pioneer at heart, the house stood out for its early conversion to organic and biodynamic viticulture from the late 1980s. Maison Joseph Drouhin is renowned worldwide for wines that combine elegance, balance and absolute respect for terroir.

The vineyard

Acquired from 1921 onwards, the Clos des Mouches climat lies at the southern tip of the Beaune appellation. The plot covers 14 hectares, half of which is devoted to red grapes. Set mid-slope on a gentle incline facing east and south-east, the vines benefit from soils of clay, marl and limestone. Farmed according to biodynamic principles with a high planting density, this terroir gives the wines a rounded structure and great finesse.

The vintage

2023 stands as one of the hottest years ever recorded in the region, surpassing even the temperatures of the previous vintage. These extreme climatic conditions favoured rapid phenolic ripening of the berries. Thanks to well-adapted farming practices, the vines were able to withstand this intense heat, yielding grapes of great quality.

Vinification and ageing

The grapes are harvested by hand into small perforated crates. After meticulous sorting, they are partially destemmed. Fermentation begins with indigenous yeasts in small open-top vats, accompanied by a two- to three-week maceration punctuated by measured punch-downs and pump-overs. After pressing in a vertical press, this Beaune 1er Cru "Clos des Mouches" 2023 is aged for 14 to 18 months in French oak barrels, around 25% of them new, made from wood air-dried for three years.
