The estate
Founded in 1880 by Joseph Drouhin in Beaune, the Joseph Drouhin House is now run by Frédéric Drouhin, representing the fourth generation of this winemaking family. The estate covers around 100 hectares across more than 60 Burgundy appellations, including 14 Grands Crus and 20 Premiers Crus, from Chablis to the Mâconnais. A pioneer of organic and biodynamic viticulture since the late 1980s, the House embodies a philosophy of respect for the terroir passed down for nearly 145 years. A founding member of the Primum Familiæ Vini association, Joseph Drouhin symbolizes the excellence of Burgundy wines around the world.
The vineyard
This Côte de Beaune Villages comes from a rigorous selection of parcels located in several communes of the Côte de Beaune. The appellation allows production across 16 distinct communes, excluding the most prestigious village appellations. The vines benefit from the diversity of terroirs in this region and are farmed according to organic and biodynamic principles. Planting density can reach 12,500 vines per hectare on certain parcels, encouraging a concentrated expression of fruit and terroir.
The vintage
The 2017 vintage in Burgundy was marked by remarkable balance. Despite some viticultural challenges during the growing season, the grapes achieved harmonious ripeness with well-integrated tannins. The year made it possible to produce approachable wines with good concentration and an appealing character, favoring balance and finesse.
Winemaking and aging
The grapes for the Côte de Beaune Villages 2017 were hand-harvested in small perforated crates. After complete destemming, the wine underwent maceration and fermentation for 1 to 2 weeks with indigenous yeasts. Pressing was carried out with care, separating press juices according to tasting criteria. Aging took place over 10 to 14 months in French oak barrels, with 15 to 20% new oak, the remainder in barrels that had held one wine or more. Weekly tastings guided winemaking decisions throughout the process.
Grape variety
100% Pinot Noir.
