James Suckling

Jim Gordon

Wow, beautiful aromas of ripe tree fruit and baking spices lead to a medium body and attractive, broad flavors that are nicely lifted by tangy acidity for great balance. Baked apple, vanilla bean, wet stone and mineral character runs all through it. Drink now or hold.

This is always early-maturing and was the first to be picked in 2022, on 24 August. Not an estate wine but they do the harvest. Coche advises that fine Meursault needs two winters in barrel. Cask sample and still on lees. Racy and lively and much more expressive than the village Meursault. Lots of depth and attraction here. Real substance and persistence. (JR)

Description

Characteristics and tasting notes of the Meursault 1er Cru "Genevrières" 2022 Joseph Drouhin

Tasting

Colour
The colour reveals a lovely pale yellow hue.

Nose
Elegant and concentrated, the nose opens with aromas of almond and freshly baked bread, before evolving towards subtle notes of spice and toasted dried fruit.

Palate
Full-bodied and generous, the palate reveals vanilla flavours that blend harmoniously with hints of citrus, extending into a remarkably persistent finish.

Food and wine pairing

This white wine from France pairs perfectly with fine fish or shellfish (grilled lobster, crayfish, prawns) served with a butter sauce. It also enhances white meats and poultry in cream sauce, as well as soft or semi-hard cheeses such as Brie or Gruyère, and even mild blue-veined cheeses. Finally, it pairs beautifully with seasonal vegetables prepared with fresh herbs and olive oil.

Serving and storage

For an optimal tasting experience, this Meursault 1er Cru "Genevrières" 2022 is best served at a temperature of 13°C. This wine can be enjoyed after a few years of cellaring and will continue to evolve favourably until around 2042.

The elegance and precision of a Meursault Premier Cru

The estate

Founded in 1880 in Beaune, Maison Joseph Drouhin is a historic figure in Burgundy. Originally a négociant house, it has expanded over the decades into a vast estate that now spans approximately 100 hectares across the region. A pioneer in environmental practices, the estate is renowned for its terroir-respectful winegrowing. Today, the fourth generation, represented by Frédéric, Véronique, Philippe, and Laurent Drouhin, leads the estate. Together, they carry forward the house's identity, centred on biodynamics and the pursuit of an authentic expression of each parcel.

The vineyard

The Meursault 1er Cru Genevrières comes from a terroir located south of Beaune, at an altitude of around 260 metres, benefiting from an ideal south-east exposure. The vines flourish on soils composed of Jurassic marl, gravelly clay, and limestone with traces of iron. The estate follows the principles of organic and biodynamic farming, promoting biodiversity and soil health. High-density planting, reaching 12,500 vines per hectare, pushes the roots to dig deep into the limestone bedrock. The grapes are harvested by hand.

The vintage

2022 stood out for its mild, warm, and dry season. Flowering took place early and rapidly towards the end of May. Summer was marked by high temperatures, but strategic rainfall, particularly during storms in June, provided the water needed at just the right time. Thanks to these water reserves, the vines retained their green foliage without experiencing stress, allowing for an ideal balance to be reached by the time the harvest began in late August.

Winemaking and aging

The creation of the Meursault 1er Cru "Genevrières" 2022 begins with a rigorous sorting of the harvested berries in small perforated crates. Pneumatic pressing is carried out slowly and gently to carefully separate the juices. After light settling, alcoholic and malolactic fermentation take place in French oak barrels (20 to 25% of which are new). The wine is then aged on the lees for 16 to 18 months, encouraging the development of texture while preserving the purity of the fruit.
