Decanter

A little reserved on the nose, brooding with notes of fresh soil, violets and berries. There's a cool mineral core here, a stony hardness that needs time to crack open. A subtle creamy note on the finish. Give this two or three years to reveal its aromatic potential.

Birte Jantzen

The 2023 Terrasses Du Larzac, a blend predominantly of Grenache Noir with Syrah and Carignan, was—unconventionally—aged in a cave, in large barrels. Quite complex and multi-layered, it shows beautiful black fruit, notes of garrigue, cumin, anise, black tea, and bergamot. Precise, delicate, succulent, and fairly long, with a calm energy, it exhales on the finish and shows great potential. Drink 2025–2032.

60% Grenache, 20% Syrah, 20% Carignan. Certified organic (AB). Tasted blind. This really does smell like strawberry cordial mixed with pomegranate juice and blitzed raspberries – pure fruit juice. But on the palate it’s a tapestry of exuberant juicy sweetness, thyme, essence of berries, berry blossom and orchard florals, embroidered with darker threads of graphite, loam, truffle and coal. The tannins fill the intersitial spaces with ink dust and quarry-dust pauses. Complex and intriguing. Mouth-wateringly more-ish. (TC)

Characteristics and tasting notes for the Les Vignes Oubliées 2023 Les Vignes Oubliées

Tasting notes

Colour
This wine reveals a red colour.

Nose
Displaying great finesse, the aromatic bouquet reveals subtle notes of garrigue, white pepper and minerality, perfectly reflecting its terroir of origin.

Palate
The palate offers a lovely fruity structure dominated by aromas of morello cherry, wild raspberry and redcurrant. The balance between richness and freshness is remarkable, supported by silky, delicate tannins. The long, precise finish unfolds with floral nuances, liquorice and a lingering touch of garrigue, all carried by a lovely acidity.

Food and wine pairing

This red wine pairs wonderfully with grilled or roasted red meats, such as lamb with Provençal herbs. It will also pair beautifully with duck, feathered game, Mediterranean dishes or wild mushroom preparations.

Other characteristics

This wine has an alcohol content of approximately 14.5%. As part of its commitment to environmental responsibility, the estate has chosen not to dress the necks of its bottles with an aluminium capsule.

The estate

Founded in 2009 by Jean-Baptiste Granier in the heights of Saint-Privat, the Les Vignes Oubliées estate was born from a desire to save abandoned high-altitude plots in the Languedoc. Now run by Jean-Baptiste Granier, the estate stands out for its unique collective model, working closely with local farmers. Committed to organic viticulture, the estate produces wines renowned for their freshness and finesse, combining Mediterranean generosity with the distinctive character of high-altitude terroirs.

The vineyard

Located within the Terrasses du Larzac appellation, the vineyard spans approximately fifteen hectares around the town of Saint-Privat. Rising between 300 and 400 metres in altitude on the foothills of the causse du Larzac, the vines benefit from a contrasting climate and a great diversity of soils composed of schist, sandstone and clay-limestone. The entire vineyard is certified organic, with meticulous soil management and exclusively hand-picked harvests.

The vintage

2023 benefited from natural rainfall and favourable climatic conditions. Combined with the vineyard's altitude, this weather allowed the grapes to reach excellent concentration while preserving the fresh acidity essential to the estate's identity.

Winemaking and aging

The Les Vignes Oubliées 2023 vintage undergoes a rigorous double sorting, both in the vineyard and at the winery. After partial destemming, maceration takes place over a period of fifteen to twenty days under controlled temperatures. The wine is then aged for twelve months in demi-muids and barrels. This process takes place within a natural cave, a restored former oil mill, offering a cool, constant temperature ideal for the wine's maturation.

Grape varieties

This blend is dominated by Grenache, complemented by Syrah and Carignan.
