The elegance of a great age-worthy white from La Rioja crafted by López de Heredia

The estate
Founded in 1877 by Rafael López de Heredia y Landeta, the bodega R. López de Heredia Viña Tondonia is a historic institution located in Haro, in La Rioja Alta. Today, the López de Heredia family still owns and runs the estate, perpetuating an ancestral savoir-faire. At the head of a vineyard of around 170 hectares, this emblematic house has made its mark throughout the world thanks to its unwavering commitment to traditional methods and long ageing periods, producing wines of exceptional longevity.

The vineyard
The grapes come exclusively from the Viña Gravonia vineyard, also known locally as Viña Zaconia. This 24-hectare terroir, farmed organically, lies only a few hundred metres from the winery, on the banks of the Ebro river in the Rioja region. Planted at an altitude ranging between 438 and 489 metres, these vines benefit from an ideal environment for producing grapes of great quality, well suited to long ageing.

The vintage
The 2017 growing cycle was particularly challenging, marked by difficult weather conditions including heavy rains, frost and hail. Nevertheless, rigorous work in the vineyards combined with a very mild month of August helped keep diseases under control. These efforts resulted in an abundant harvest of fine quality, beginning on 24 September for the white grape varieties of this plot.

Winemaking and ageing
The production process of the Vina Gravonia 2017 relies on traditional methods. The wine undergoes a long ageing of four years in oak barrels, punctuated by two rackings per year. Clarification is carried out naturally using fresh egg whites. Finally, the wine is bottled without any filtration, where it continues to rest peacefully.
