Description

Characteristics and tasting advice for Ermitage « De l’Orée » 2025 from M. Chapoutier

Tasting

Appearance

Pale yellow, the wine displays bright golden highlights.

Nose

The nose, complex and nuanced, opens with notes of toasted corn, then evolves toward white-fleshed fruits, freshly cut rhubarb, and fresh hazelnut. With aeration, hints of lemon zest emerge, underscored by a pleasant menthol freshness.

Palate

The attack is broad. The palate, both fresh and delicate, reveals subtle aniseed accents reminiscent of fennel, accompanied by notes of brown butter and a beautiful expression of white-fleshed fruits. The texture, noble and flavorful, leads to a long, vertical finish marked by fine caramelized nuances.

An Ermitage white wine combining finesse and vibrancy

The estate

Founded in 1808 in Tain-l’Hermitage, the Maison M. Chapoutier holds a leading position in the Rhône Valley. Initially known under another name, it has been associated with the Chapoutier family since 1897. A pioneer of biodynamics in the region, the estate also stands out for featuring Braille on all its labels since 1996, as a sign of openness and inclusivity. Today, Mathilde and Maxime Chapoutier lead the estate, continuing the family’s standards and philosophy while bringing a contemporary approach, in service of a vineyard recognized worldwide.

The vineyard

This cuvée comes exclusively from the Les Murets lieu-dit, on the eastern slope of the famous Ermitage hill. The terroir, particularly distinctive, is composed of very old fluvio-glacial alluvium mixed with red clay. The vines, 60 to 70 years old, are farmed according to biodynamic principles. Their naturally low yields promote high concentration and a very faithful expression of the terroir.

The vintage

A vintage that began with a rather mild and very rainy winter, building good water reserves, followed by a prolonged cold period delaying bud break and reducing the risk of frost. Spring, alternating between rain and sunshine, led to strong vegetative growth and increased pressure on the vines, with early flowering but few bunches. The summer was marked by two heatwaves and a hail episode in Crozes-Hermitage, causing some losses. The harvest, early from mid-August, was spread out thanks to rainfall at the end of August, refining ripeness.

Grape variety

« De l’Orée » 2025 from M. Chapoutier is made from 100% Marsanne.
