An elegant and mineral Maury from Roussillon
The estate
Founded in 1816, Mas Amiel now spans approximately 150 hectares of vines in the Agly Valley, in the heart of Roussillon. Since its acquisition by Olivier Decelle in 1999, the estate has undergone a major transformation, establishing itself as a benchmark for dry Maury wines while preserving its heritage in naturally sweet wines. Under the winemaking direction of Nicolas Raffy, the property obtained biodynamic certification in 2020, confirming its commitment to viticulture that respects both the terroir and the environment.
The vineyard
Vers le Nord 2021 comes from a 2-hectare plot located in the Maury appellation, facing north. This particular exposure promotes slow ripening of the grapes and preserves their freshness despite the warm climate of Roussillon. The soils are composed of black marls and calcareous schists, giving the wine its characteristic minerality. The century-old Grenache Noir vines, complemented by a small amount of Syrah, benefit from this privileged location.
The vintage
The 2021 vintage was marked by a late spring frost episode that affected many French wine regions. However, subsequent weather conditions allowed for optimal ripening of the grapes, with a stable summer followed by a favorable September that permitted harvesting at ideal maturity.
Winemaking and aging
The Vers le Nord 2021 grapes are hand-harvested, followed by careful destemming. The winemaking process favors gentleness in order to extract fruit and finesse rather than power. Aging is generally carried out in concrete tanks or large oak casks, preserving the purity of the fruit without imparting oak influence on the wine.
