Description
Characteristics and tasting tips for Mas Jullien 2010
Tasting
Appearance
The wine displays a deep and intense color, characteristic of a red wine crafted from southern grape varieties that have reached full maturity.
Nose
The nose reveals remarkable aromatic complexity with notes of blackcurrant and blackcurrant bud. A massive mineral dimension gradually unfolds, accompanied by a distinctive ferrous quality that reflects the authentic expression of the limestone and clay terroir of the Terrasses du Larzac.
Palate
On the palate, Mas Jullien 2010 stands out for its concentration and structure. The wine offers remarkable density while retaining a distinctive freshness that avoids the typical pitfalls of southern wines. The intense minerality lends power and depth to the whole. The tannins, supple and well-integrated, support a rich body without ever dominating. The finish lingers at length, revealing dark fruit flavors intertwined with a persistent minerality.
Food and wine pairings
This wine pairs perfectly with lamb in all its forms. It also elegantly accompanies a grilled rib steak, particularly when served with herbaceous elements such as arugula sautéed in olive oil and black olives. Quality red meats and full-flavored cheeses also make excellent gastronomic partners.
Serving and storage
It is recommended to decant Mas Jullien 2010 for at least one hour before serving to allow the wine to open up fully. The ideal serving temperature is between 60 and 64°F. This vintage can be enjoyed now and will continue to evolve favorably until around 2032.
An iconic wine from the Terrasses du Larzac combining power and finesse
The estate
Founded in 1985 by Olivier Jullien in the village of Jonquières, north of Montpellier, Mas Jullien now spans approximately eighteen hectares. Olivier Jullien, still the owner and manager of the estate, is recognized as one of the leading architects of the qualitative renaissance of the Languedoc. A visionary pioneer, he demonstrated that the terroirs of the Terrasses du Larzac possessed exceptional potential for producing world-class wines. The estate practices biodynamic viticulture without official certification, favoring intellectual independence and the freedom to adapt to the specific needs of the terroir.
The vineyard
The vines of Mas Jullien are planted on the rocky terraces of the Larzac plateau, at altitudes that can reach several hundred meters. The vineyard benefits from a remarkable diversity of soils including clay, chalk, limestone gravel, sandstone and siliceous earth. This pedological mosaic, combined with a Mediterranean climate tempered by altitude and the proximity of the Cévennes, creates ideal conditions for the expression of complex and mineral wines. Yields are deliberately kept low, around thirty hectoliters per hectare, to promote concentration and deep rooting of the vines in these exceptional terroirs of the Coteaux du Languedoc.
The vintage
The 2010 vintage is renowned for its remarkable balance and great aging potential. The climatic conditions produced grapes of exceptional quality, combining optimal ripeness with preserved freshness—essential characteristics for crafting wines destined for long bottle aging.
Winemaking and aging
Mas Jullien 2010 was vinified according to the methods developed by Olivier Jullien through years of experimentation. After crushing and careful berry selection, fermentation took place in tanks with indigenous yeasts, accompanied by regular pumping over and meticulous temperature control. Maceration lasted approximately three weeks. The careful aging was carried out in demi-muids followed by large oak foudres, allowing gentle progressive oxidation without imparting pronounced oaky notes. This approach preserves the authentic expression of the terroir while adding complexity and structure to the wine.
Grape varieties
Syrah, Mourvèdre, Carignan and Grenache make up this blend typical of the Terrasses du Larzac.
