Wine Spectator

Alison Napjus

This harmonious, medium- to full-bodied version is lively and expressive, with good tension from the creamy tannins, creating a frame for flavors of fig cake, crushed boysenberry, espresso, sweet tobacco, minerally iron and stone. Long and focused on the fresh finish. Tempranillo, Mazuelo and Graciano. Drink now through 2030. 3,000 cases made, 400 cases imported.

Mike DeSimone

Deep violet-red in the glass, this wine has a nose of black cherry, black currant, vanilla and dried Mediterranean herbs. Deep-set tannins coat the tongue and gums before revealing blackberry preserve, butterscotch, anisette and violet flavors. The enduring finish offers a splash of pomegranate. Drink through 2039.

Intense nose of black fruit, ink, roasted espresso, black truffle and dried rosemary. It’s full-bodied with so much power and concentration. Firm but very velvety and integrated tannins. Deep core of black fruit. Yet, it’s not heavy. Long. One for the cellar. Try this from 2027.

A powerful, elegant Rioja Alta wine by Muga

The estate

Founded in 1932 by Don Isaac Muga and Aurora Caño in Haro, in the heart of La Rioja, Bodegas Muga remains a family-owned estate now run by Jorge and Isaac Muga Palacín. The estate stands out for its complete in-house cooperage, being the only Rioja winery with its own master cooper and three coopers overseeing 17,000 barrels. This exceptional autonomy makes Muga a symbol of Spanish wine prestige recognized worldwide.

The vineyard

The vines of Torre Muga 2019 are planted on the slopes of the Obarenses Mountains in Rioja Alta, benefiting from an ideal southwesterly exposure. Clay-limestone and alluvial soils give the wine its characteristic structure and complexity.

Winemaking and aging

Torre Muga 2019 is crafted using traditional winemaking, with spontaneous fermentation in wooden vats thanks to indigenous yeasts, without temperature control. Maceration lasts two to three weeks. The wine is then aged for 18 months in new Allier French oak barrels. Before bottling, a light artisanal fining with fresh egg white is carried out, thus perpetuating the estate’s traditional methods.

Grape varieties

Tempranillo (75 %), Mazuelo (15 %) and Graciano (10 %).
