The authentic expression of Pinot Noir on the terroir of Pernand-Vergelesses

The estate

The Leflaive family's history in Burgundy dates back to 1717, but it was in 1984 that Olivier Leflaive founded his own négociant and winemaking house in Puligny-Montrachet. This producer stands out for its unique model, in which grapes are purchased on the vine and harvested by its own teams, ensuring rigorous control. Since 2020, the estate has been run by his daughter, Julie Leflaive, who upholds the family's values while modernising the estate. The house now farms around a hundred hectares across multiple climats.

The vineyard

The terroir of Pernand-Vergelesses forms a natural amphitheatre located at the northern end of the Butte de Corton. The vines, with an average age of 36 years, thrive at an altitude ranging from 250 to 300 metres, benefiting from a favourable east and south-facing exposure. The soils, particularly well suited to Pinot Noir on the mid-slope, consist of a clay-limestone mix rich in minerals and crushed stone, promoting excellent natural drainage. The vineyard is managed according to sustainable farming principles.

The vintage

2024 put the winemakers' expertise to the test with extreme weather conditions. This vintage was particularly marked by pervasive humidity and record rainfall, leading to strong mildew pressure. However, thanks to the free-draining nature of the limestone soils and tireless work in the vineyards, the grapes harvested were able to reach optimal ripeness and retain a lovely freshness despite these climatic challenges.

Winemaking and aging

The 2024 Pernand-Vergelesses Village is harvested entirely by hand. Fermentation takes place in French oak barrels sourced from different forests to preserve a diversity of expressions. Aging lasts a total of 12 months, including a 4-month period in stainless steel tanks to preserve the wine's freshness and brightness. The proportion of new barrels is carefully set at 20% to bring subtle woody complexity without masking the fruit.
