Description
Characteristics and tasting notes for Pierre-Jean Villa's Crozes-Hermitage "Accroche-Coeur" 2022
Tasting
Colour
The colour reveals an intense ruby red hue with violet highlights.
Nose
Highly expressive, the aromatic bouquet opens with floral notes and ripe black fruits such as black cherry and blackberry. It is then enriched with touches of black pepper, thyme and subtle spicy nuances.
Palate
The attack is fresh and vibrant, carried by lovely liveliness. The palate reveals a silky texture with supple, perfectly integrated tannins. There is a lovely concentration of blackberry and blackcurrant flavours, underscored by spicy notes, leading to a long, elegant and easy-drinking finish.
Food and wine pairing
This red wine pairs wonderfully with lamb flavoured with Provence herbs, a fine aged rib of beef, or game meats such as wild boar or venison. It will also pair very well with aged hard cheeses.
Service and storage
For an optimal tasting experience, this wine is best served at a temperature between 16 and 18°C. Approachable from its youth, this vintage of Crozes-Hermitage "Accroche-Coeur" 2022 can also be cellared and enjoyed until around 2034.
The pure, fruit-driven expression of a Crozes-Hermitage wine
The estate
Founded in 2009 from the ground up, the Pierre-Jean Villa estate quickly established itself as a leading name in the northern Rhône Valley, in France. Drawing on his Burgundian experience, Pierre-Jean Villa, the current owner, has built a vineyard that now spans 20 hectares across several prestigious appellations. Joined by his children Hugo and Pauline, he cultivates his vines with the utmost respect for the environment, having obtained organic certification in 2021 and moving towards biodynamic practices. The estate is renowned for its authentic cuvées.
The vineyard
The grapes used for this cuvée come from the Crozes-Hermitage appellation. The vines, under ten years old, are planted at a density of 5,500 vines per hectare on flat terrain. The terroir consists of fluvio-glacial alluvial soils, river-rolled pebbles and loess, providing excellent drainage and good heat retention. This vineyard benefits from a moderate continental climate, ideal for achieving full berry ripeness.
The vintage
The year 2022 stood out for its warm and relatively dry weather conditions, marking a particularly early vintage. The growing cycle accelerated, allowing the harvest to be completed almost four weeks ahead of previous years, while still producing berries of excellent ripeness.
Winemaking and aging
To craft the Crozes-Hermitage "Accroche-Coeur" 2022, the berries are fully destemmed and then carefully sorted on a vibrating table. Fermentation begins with indigenous yeasts, followed by a maceration period of around fifteen days in concrete vats and wooden vessels. The wine is then aged for twelve months in 500-litre demi-muids and used oak barrels, in order to preserve the vibrancy of the fruit. Rackings are carried out in accordance with the lunar calendar, and the wine is bottled without fining, with minimal filtration if necessary.
