The elegance and freshness of a great Toscana wine by Tenuta San Guido
The estate
Established in its winegrowing dimension in the 1940s by Mario Incisa della Rocchetta, Tenuta San Guido is a legendary estate located in Bolgheri, in Tuscany. Spanning 2,500 hectares, the property is a unique ecosystem combining a nature reserve, horse breeding, and olive groves. Today, the founding family still leads this prestigious brand: Nicolò Incisa della Rocchetta serves as honorary president, supported by Alessandro Berlingieri as president and Carlo Paoli as CEO. The estate is world-renowned for its pioneering approach and the excellence of its wines.
The vineyard
The vines dedicated to production cover around 100 hectares, a tiny portion of the estate. Located in the Tuscany region, near the Mediterranean coast, the vineyard ranges from 80 to 400 meters in altitude. The soils are highly complex, combining limestone, alberese, gabbro, marl, pebbles, and clay, offering excellent drainage. The microclimate benefits from the protection of surrounding hills against cold winds and from the cooling influence of sea breezes, promoting marked temperature differences between day and night.
The vintage
The year 2024 began with a cold, rainy autumn, followed by a mild, dry winter that encouraged early heat accumulation. Spring brought ideal conditions with early, even budbreak in April, followed by optimal flowering and fruit set in May and June. The summer was hot and well ventilated, with significant diurnal temperature variation. After an early veraison in July, a weather front in August slowed ripening, requiring thinning for the merlot, while cabernet sauvignon was unaffected. From mid-September onward, stable, sunny weather swept by northerly winds allowed for perfect ripeness.
Winemaking and aging
The estate’s philosophy favors minimal intervention with spontaneous fermentations using indigenous yeasts. For Guidalberto 2024, fermentation took place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, finishing at the end of October. Aging lasted approximately 13 months in 225-liter oak barrels (90% French oak and 10% barrels from Hungary, Slavonia, and Germany), composed of 40% new oak and 60% second- and third-fill barrels. The wine then benefited from a short period of bottle aging. A new winery dedicated specifically to the production of this wine was also built.
Grape varieties
