A Hunter Valley semillon with outstanding aging potential
The estate
Founded in 1858 by Edward Tyrrell in the Hunter Valley, Tyrrell's Wines remains a family-owned estate, now run by Bruce Tyrrell and his children John, Chris and Jane, representing the fourth and fifth generations. This iconic New South Wales estate has eleven century-old vineyards, including a pre-phylloxera Shiraz block planted in 1879 and the world's oldest continuously planted Chardonnay, dating back to 1908. A pioneer in introducing Chardonnay to Australia, Tyrrell's has distinguished itself with its Vat 1 Hunter Valley Semillon, Australia's most awarded white wine.
The vineyard
The Vat 1 Semillon comes exclusively from the Short Flat Vineyard, specifically from the oldest and highest-quality parcels of this Australian vineyard located in the Hunter Valley. The vines, planted in 1923 on their own roots, are grown without irrigation. This historic vineyard covers 13.31 hectares in total, of which 2.85 hectares are devoted to Semillon.
The vintage
The 2019 vintage stands out for its high quality. Dry conditions and slightly lower yields encouraged intense concentration of aromas in the fruit. The harvest took place on February 5 and 6, 2019, allowing the grapes to be picked at optimal ripeness.
Winemaking and aging
The Vat 1 Semillon 2019 is crafted using traditional methods. The grapes are hand-harvested and then gently pressed. Only the free-run juice is used for fermentation, which takes place at low temperature in stainless-steel tanks. The wine is then matured in tank until bottling. No oak is used in the making of this wine, preserving the purity and expression of the grape variety.
Grape variety
100% Semillon.
