Description
Characteristics and Tasting Tips for the Mâcon-Villages "Grand Élevage" 2025 from Verget
Tasting notes
Appearance
The colour of this cuvée is typically a pale yellow, bright and limpid, with subtle golden highlights.
Nose
The aromatic bouquet reveals notes of white-fleshed fruits, such as apple and pear, mingled with hints of citrus and white flowers. With aeration, delicate toasty nuances of fresh hazelnut and butter emerge, reflecting its careful ageing.
Palate
Ample and full-bodied, the palate offers beautiful substance supported by a mineral, lively backbone. The whole stretches towards a straight, persistent and slightly saline finish.
Food and Wine Pairing
This white wine pairs ideally with grilled fish or fish in a light sauce, poultry in cream, vegetable risotto, as well as hard cooked-curd cheeses such as Comté or Beaufort, or a fresh goat's cheese.
Serving and Cellaring
Approachable in its youth thanks to its gourmand profile, the Mâcon-Villages "Grand Élevage" 2025 also has fine ageing potential and can be enjoyed until around 2030.
The Elegance and Richness of a Great White Wine from the Mâconnais
The Estate
Founded in 1990 by Jean-Marie Guffens, the négociant house Verget is based in Sologny, in the heart of the Mâconnais, in Burgundy. A true pioneer in the revitalisation of this region, the company is still run today by its founder, joined since 2012 by cellar master Julien Desplans. Specialising exclusively in white wines, Verget stands out for its "haute couture négoce" approach. The house sources high-quality grapes from carefully selected partner growers, applying the same standards as a traditional wine estate.
The Vineyard
The grapes for this Mâcon-Villages come from carefully selected plots in the Mâconnais area. The vines thrive on terroirs typical of the region, made up of clay-limestone soils often rich in stones and marked by a pronounced clay character. These geological features promote both aromatic concentration and mineral tension. In keeping with the house's standards, the grapes are harvested by hand.
Vinification and Ageing
True to the house philosophy, the Mâcon-Villages "Grand Élevage" 2025 benefits from a minimally interventionist vinification, with fermentations started by indigenous yeasts. Ageing takes place on fine lees, with measured lees stirring, using a judicious combination of tanks and oak barrels. This method adds volume, texture and aromatic complexity while preserving the original freshness of the fruit.
